Fingerpicking Blues Guitar is a never ending study full of surprises and discoveries. Each key of the Guitar offers new sounds and textures. A blues played in the key of C sounds world's apart from a blues played in the keys of A G D or E. This series focuses on a single key for each lesson. The key of G offers specific advantages. It is ideal for the alternating bass technique i.e. Mississippi John Hurt's style of playing. In this lesson we start by learning an arrangement of Marshall Owens' 1930s recording of Try Me One More Time. This was originally played in an Open G tuning but is here arranged in standard tuning using a JohnHurt approach. Not all blues from the 1920s and 1930s were fingerpicked. Jim Jackson was a popular Memphis songster who basically strummed his Guitar. But his repertoire was full of wonderful songs. Stefan Grossman has taken his Wild About My Loving and has tried to keep the original feel by combining a strum approach intermingled with fingerpicking the melody. Little Hat Jones was an amazing fingerstyle bluesman. His Bye Bye Baby Blues was played in the key of G. Here his version is fully transcribed note for note. Blind Boy Fuller recorded many blues in the key of G. In this lesson we'll tackle three of his arrangements: Baby Let Me Lay It On You Baby Quit Your Low Down Ways and I Crave My Pigmeat. We study his playing note for note but also explore variations. By the end of this lesson you will know six great tunes and have an insight in to fingerpicking blues in the key of G. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Each tune is taught phrase by phrase and played slowly on a split-screen. As well the original old recordings are included in the Bonus Audio section. Memphis has long been a landing place for musicians from the surrounding rural areas in Tennessee Arkansas and Mississippi and in the 1920s and 1930s it was a wide open town with plenty of opportunities for musicians to performtheir music and make a living. As a result of Memphis's hub status it developed a strong blues scene in the 1920s and 1930s with a host of outstanding singers and players. Many of these musicians had successful careers asrecording artists but a surprisingly large number of similarly gifted musicians went unrecorded or only got the opportunity to record a few titles.This DVD lesson offers instruction in the music of many of the finestguitarists to record out of Memphis in the 1920s and 1930s. The city of St. Louis played host in the 1920s and 1930s to one of the most distinctive and vital blues scenes ever documented on record. Like Memphis and Atlanta St. Louis served as a sort of magnet attracting musicians from the surrounding hinterlands and providing performance opportunities that were not available out in the country. Many of the St. Louis musicians were transplanted Mississippians like Charley Jordan while others like Clifford Gibson and Teddy Darby originally hailed from Kentucky. The various early influences that the music of these players displayed ended up coalescing into something that might be called the 'St. Louis sound'.Included on thisDVD are transcriptions and teaching of the songs of Teddy Darby where the guitar and voice track each other closely Clifford Gibson with his distinctive approach to playing in Spanish tuning and the mysterious low cross-note sound Charley Jordan with his acrobatic thumbwork and occasionally raggy sound and the enigmatic Lane Hardin who only recorded two titles under his own name. Noel Gay (1898-1954) was a British composer who found success in the London Music Halls of the 1930s and is often cited as Britainâs answer to Irving Berlin. His collaboration with the songwriter Ralph Butler (1886-1969) led to some of the most memorable popular songs of all time including Run Rabbit Run and The Sun Has Got His Hat On. However their most successful creation is probably Hey! Little Hen written in 1941. This abiding classic has been arranged here for Piano Voice and Guitar.
