Paul Hindemith - das erkennt man inzwischen mehr und mehr - ist eine der bedeutendsten Kunstlerpersonlichkeiten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Oper Cardillac gehort, das haben zahlreiche Inszenierungen in den letzten Jahren bewiesen, zu den besten und eigenwilligsten Stucken, die im Bereich des Musiktheaters in diesem Jahrhundert hervorgebracht worden sind; und die Oper Mathis der Maler ist ein Schlusselwerk im Kontext der kunstlerischen Problematik im Spannungsfeld zwischen Kunst und Politik.In den letzten Jahren ist es zunehmend deutlich und offensichtlich geworden, dass die Personlichkeit Paul Hindemiths entschieden interessantere Zuge aufweist, als man lange Zeit zu konzedieren bereit war. Theodor W. Adornos Urteile uber Paul Hindemith haben die offentliche Diskussion um einen der bekanntesten deutschen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts entscheidend gepragt. Ende der siebziger Jahre gab es so gut wie keine massgebliche Stimme, die der in der Textsammlung Ad vocem Hindemith formulierten Diagnose einer geduckt spiessigen, latent autoritatshorigen Musikantenmusik Triftiges entgegenzusetzen gehabt hatte. Die bereits wenige Jahre spater zogernd einsetzenden Bemuhungen um eine Rehabilitation des Hindemithschen Werkes klammerten Adornos Fundamentalkritik zumeist aus und versaumten - von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen - jene direkte Auseinandersetzung mit seinen Texten, die (mit einer Verspatung von fast 30 Jahren) im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Untersuchung steht.

Die Harmonie der Welt - unter diesem Titel variierte Paul Hindemith ab 1939 verschiedene kompositorische Formationen: vorwiegend eine 1957 uraufgefuhrte Oper, deren Protagonist dem Astronomen, Theologen und Mathematiker Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) nachempfunden ist, ausserdem eine gleichnamige Symphonie und eine musikalisch verwandte Motette. Die Studie arbeitet die Quellen aus mehreren Jahrzehnten erstmals vollstandig auf und rekonstruiert so allein elf unterschiedliche Versionen der Oper mit zahlreichen Varianten. Die Harmonie der Welt wird dabei nicht als 'Werk(e)', sondern als ein einziger, hochst variabler und offener 'Kompositionsprozess' aufgefasst, der sowohl autorbezogene als auch kulturkontextuelle Verortungen der verschiedenen, schriftlich festgehaltenen 'Prozesszustande' ermoglicht.
