The prophetic tone draws on similar images of river, estuary and ocean that inspired the finale of A London Symphony. Ralph Vaughan Williams' Norfolk Rhapsody No. 2 for large Orchestra.Vaughan Williams originally wrote three Norfolk Rhapsodies with the intention of turning them into a three-movement Norfolk Symphony. This the second rhapsody is a telescoped slow movement and scherzo which has been completed and edited by Stephen Hogger. The first has long been in the repertoire but numbers two and three have not been performed since 1914. The third rhapsody unfortunately did not survive.

Written for Vaughan William's choir in surrey these are beautifully judged for amateur voices. The music is direct and sharply characterised. Originally with orchestra they are equally suitable for performance within choral concerts or as church anthems with either organ or piano accompaniment.

Rarely has a musical work been better characterized by its subtitle than Nicolas Bacri’s Lyric Interlude: ‘A Study in Pastoral Style’. When in 2008 the composer received the commission for a piece with English Horn from Cecilia Benner patron of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit he immediately thought of the duo between this instrument and the Oboe that Berlioz in the Symphonie fantastique placed at the beginning of the ‘Scène aux champs’ making suddenly appear a nocturnal country landscape where two shepherds carry on a dialogue on their pipes. First performed in March 2009 inits original version for English Horn Violin and Cello the Lyric Interlude for English Horn and Piano (Op.110b) nonetheless proclaims another tradition: that of British pastoralism illustrated by the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) the 50th anniversary of his death having just been celebrated. This score pays him homage of rare sensitivity: set off by refined counterpoint the undulating lament of the beginning rhythmically supple evokes the waving wheat as does Vaughan Williams in the opening undulation of his Symphony No.3. The lyrical effusion briefly interrupted by a scherzo in 6/8 again pours out making the work evolve towards a slow ecstatic atmosphere close to the last of the English composer’s Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes. Far from bucolic postcard clichés and servile imitation this Lyric Interlude opens the doors to a realm where pure beauty reigns. The composer also wrote another version of this work for English Horn (or Flute Clarinet or Viola) Violin and Cello Op.110a (AL 30 751)

Par VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH. Johann Sebastian Bach did not write any cello concertos. Or did he? Many of his music manuscripts disappeared after his death. Included in that lost treasure may have been a couple of cello concertos. Bach wrote six suites for cello and three sonatas for viola da gamba, so, yes, why not a cello or a gamba concerto? Fools By Heavenly Compulsion - String Quartet No.3 is a work by David Stoll for String Quartet. The work is divided into three movements Nothing Storm and Never taking their titles and imagery from Shakespeare's 'King Lear'. This is the score and parts for this work a full performance of which lasts around 20 minutes. Commissioned by the Bingham String Quartet with funds from the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust Stoll wrote it in the winter of 2001-2.

In The Bleak Midwinter is one of three hymns that Holst composed at the request of Ralph Vaughan Williams for the English Hymnal which he was editing. Rossetti’s poem had not been published until 1904 after her death and so was a new text to Holst though it has become familiar now through this setting and that of Harold Darke.Holst was a writer of hymns over several religious streams Hymn to Dionysus Rig Veda Hymns Hymn to Jesus but in this one he achieves a simplicity of melody and accompaniment that lends a moment of introspection to the joyous season. It is perhaps less jolly that some other carols because it was intended as a hymn.
