Mozart's sister Maria AnnaMozart known as Nannerl started receiving Piano lessons her father gave her a music book in which he and others gradually wrote down little recital pieces.This book was soon passed on to her brother and noticing hisremarkable talent for composing the children's father wrote down some of his son's first works in the book.This Henle Urtext edition is taken from the complete volume of Mozart’s Piano Pieces (HN22) and contains a newpreface by the editor Ullrich Scheideler. Lucio Silla K. 135Dramma per musica in three actsOn 13 December 1769 Leopold Mozart and his son Wolfgang set out on their first tour of Italy. It was not until 28 March 1771 that they finally returned to Salzburg. The trip brought the young composer two commissions for opere serie. In March 1770 he was commissioned to write Mitridate K.87 (74a) for the 1770–71 Carneval season at the Regio Ducal Teatro in Milan. Mozart started work on the opera in Bologna on 29 September 1770 and the première duly took place on the Feast of St. Stephen (26 December) in 1770. The second Lucio Silla (K. 135) again commissioned for the 1771–72 Carneval season inMilan doubtless resulted from the success of Mitridate. News of the commission reached the Mozarts in March 1771 in Verona where they had stopped on their return to Salzburg. (At roughly the same time Wolfgang received an invitation from Vienna to supply a serenata teatrale for the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand the third son of Maria Theresia scheduled to take place in Milan in October 1771. A Facsimile Edition of the Autographs-Only about a tenth of Mozarts works were printed during his lifetime the rest having been published without the benefit of his supervision. This long-awaited edition of the autograph score offers a rare opportunity to see Mozarts violin concertosaccording to the composers intentions. Thanks to the well-preserved condition of the original manuscripts and Mozarts legible handwriting these reproductions of his scores can be used for study reference and performance. In addition to the fiveworks Concerto No. 1 in B Flat K. 207; Concerto No. 2 in D K. 211; Concerto No. 3 in G K. 216; Concerto No. 4 in D K. 218; and Concerto No. 5 in A K. 219 the volume includes two additional pieces the Adagio in E K. 261 and the Rondo in BFlat K. 261a. The first edition of this volume was published in a limited edition in 1986 and has been virtually unobtainable for many years. Two informative introductory essays by violinist Gabriel Banat who located the manuscripts missing sinceWorld War II supplement the collection: the first one traces Mozarts relationship with the violin and the other examines the history and importance of these manuscripts thought to have been forever lost.
