Few 20th century composers focussed their creative energies as thoroughly on the renewal of musical theatre as Kurt Weill. Three years before his death he wrote retrospectively: 'Since realising, at the age of 19, that the musical theatre is my proper domain, I have consistently tried to solve the formal problems of musical theatre in my own way.'
