The last decades we humans have witnessed a significant number of disturbing developments. If we look at the direct and persistent destructive influence of humans on nature: air and water quality are reducing, soils are depleting, crops are short of pollinators, coasts are less protected from storms, deforestation, the degradation of land, loss of biodiversity and pollution. In stark contrast we find the intelligence and boundless creativity of humans: what about all the high technological advancements? What lies ahead in the realm of Artificial Intelligence? Will we let machines make human decisions? What ethical issues arise there? This composition reflects the desperation and urgency of the human need for action. The music draws inspiration from the brutal natural forces that ravage our world as a direct consequence of human failure and selfishness. Are we heading towards a 'Judgment Day'? Or will humanity find a way to reverse negative trends towards a more livable, peaceful, and joyful environment for humans, animals, and nature? To underscore this message, composer Peter Knockaert opted for a highly classical idiom that has been used by many composers in classical music: the 'Dies Irae'. Traditionally, the Dies Irae is the third part of a requiem (funeral mass). The text used in 'Judgment Day? (for optional choir) is coming from the original Latin text.

The composer writes: These three pieces are based on movements from my Mass of the Apocalypse, commissioned for the 300th anniversary of St James' Church, Piccadilly and recorded by the St James' Singers/Ivor Bolton. They are dedicated to Peter Sheppard Sk''rved and the Kreutzer Quartet in gratitude for their outstanding CD of my chamber music released early in 2020. They gave the first performance of the Three Pieces, which was filmed and streamed in November 2020, but the live premiere was given by the Gildas Quartet in the William Alwyn Festival at Southwold Church on 8 October 2021..

The composer Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903), a friend of Johannes Brahms, devoted his work almost exclusively to piano and chamber music as well as lieder. Among his numerous works are also collections pieces of easy difficulty or with easy educational demands. They include the “very small pieces for string quartet” (without opus number). These pieces are seven miniatures of varying character, from cantabile to lively. Since they are, for the most part, technically easy to master, they offer the opportunity to practise chamber music ensemble playing: listening to each other, responding, coming in together, taking over and other challenges of the string quartet. Quartet sound itself can also be trained with the pieces - the ideal preparation for auditions and competitions.

In my sixth work for a string quartet, there is a very simple melody concealed in the background. That melody (distant voices) is played within an extremely slow tempo, and the notes which form the melody gain different textures by becoming disassembled, and played by different techniques. In our daily lives, our inner voices become concealed by our daily customs. The act of composing, tome, is to find out that concealed distant voices, make those voices spatialized and construct them within the musical time. This work is dedicated to Alois Lageder. The String Quartet no. 4, subtitled Dedication, was commissioned by the CNDM of Madrid to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven and was written for, and dedicated to, the Cuarteto Casals (2017). This one-movement work, lasting some 11 minutes, is based on a small motif from the op quartet. 130 as a tribute to the German master. The work, that explores the full range of the technical, musical, and emotional scope of the quartet medium, has a ternary arrangement, with a slow introduction and a conclusive stretta on the B-flat note (like the one that opens Op. 130). Its course includes marked contrasts between the contemplative, lyrical, static and suspensive sections - in the manner of stagnations - and those with a more lively tempo, playful and occasionally festive.
