Jeff Reyolds has arranged a beautiful setting of the Saint-Saens Veni Creator Spiritus (Come Creator Spirit, a 9th Century Pentecost plainsong hymn) for 4-part Trombone Ensemble. The original work for TTBB men's chorus and optional Organ was written in 1858. Saint-Saens was a Roman Catholic Church organist in his early years and produced a volume of music that was easy to sing.Mr. Reynolds calls this music Church Polyphonic style that came out of the late Renaissance and endured for a couple centuries into the Romantic period. This work begins with a beautiful unison chant and moves into four polyphony sections concluding with a soft Amen. The music is of moderate difficulty with the first part in tenor clef.

After musical training in Naples Niccolo Jommelli began to make his name as an opera composer from the end of the 1730ies onwards. From 1750 until 1753 he was assistant director of music at St. Peter's, Rome, and responsible for the music at the Cappella Giulia - years which were decisive for Jommelli's sacred music. During those years he also composed the three-movement setting of the Whitsun hymn Veni Creator Spiritus for solo soprano, mixed-voice choir, string orchestra and continuo. It is marked by the maturity of the writing for the solo voice, modelled on the example of composers such as Johann Adolf Hasse, and by stylistic hallmarks of Jommelli's music, such as his relatively simple yet highly effective choral writing. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4041800.

Antonio Caldara, with about 3,400 works to his credit, ranks among the most prolific composers of the Baroque era and of music history in general. From 1716 Caldara was employed as the Vice-Music Director at the Court of Vienna, where he quickly developed into the primary and favorite composer of the musically knowledgeable Emperor Karl VI. Caldara's festive setting of the sequence for Whitsun, Veni Sancte Spiritus, which may have been composed around 1725, is now made available for the first time in print. The catchy and compact piece is suited for concert performance and is also excellently suited for the liturgical context of Whitsun: during the Mass, for example, as entrance or exit music or as music for the offertory. Through similar scoring requirements Caldara's setting of the sequence can also be used with many compositions of the Ordinary without any additional effort. For most church choirs the tutti sections with Caldara's favored homophonic, yet effective vocal writing represent a grateful task. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2770200.

For the Pueri Cantores choral series, Keith Kalemba has crafted this fine choral arrangement of the timeless and beautiful chant Veni, Creator Spiritus. It was originally commissioned as a three-part piece for men's choir, but is presented here in Latin and English for any three-part choir, whether youth, women or men's voices. The ancient poetic images are skillfully evoked as the chant melody weaves effortlessly through the vocal parts.

In Georg Philipp Telemann's work Veni Sancte Spiritus the emphasis is on songlike melodies and uncommon tone colouring. While the composer probably expected the entire work to be sung by soloists, in this version the outer movements are sung chorally, and may be supported instrumentally if so desired. Performance in this form does not contradict Telemann's concept of his composition, but provides scope for emphasizing the varied elements of his sound picture.
