This trilingual arrangement was envisioned for use during the Preparation of the Gifts at the Evening Mass of Holy Thursday. It would also be useful throughout the liturgical year whenever themes of love, charity, and service feature prominently in the Lectionary, as well as at wedding and anniversary liturgies. The choral parts underneath the verse and the optional parts for C instrument and cello help add color and variety. However, the hymn could be led by cantor and piano alone. When used during the Preparation of the Gifts, the optional coda allows flexibility to tailor the music to the length of the rite.

John has composed an inspired refrain and bridge to the verses of the well-known WLP classic “Where Charity and Love Prevail†by Dom Paul Benoit. Here John adds his distinctive touch with a slight shift of tonality from the E-minor stanzas to newly written melody, harmony, and text in G major. The refrain’s message speaks of hope, peace, love, and mercy when love prevails. The bridge section returns us to the final verses and refrain.

The arrangements in this collection represent 80 percent of Duruflé's entire a cappella oeuvre, with three from the four Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens Op. 10 (1960) alongside Notre Père Op. 14 (1977/1978). The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for “sound†to create the portmanteau word “sound together†or “harmony.†The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire. In addition to new repertoire and new arrangements, you will also find essential parts of the classical German, Scandinavian, French and English SATB repertoire, carefully and considerately reworked for SAM. The arrangements retain the characteristic features of the original movements and have almost the same richness of timbre, resulting in works which sound nearly unchanged to an audience. Piano reductions of all choral movements facilitate rehearsal preparation. The arrangements offer development opportunities for all voice sections, bringing new life and new quality to SAM choir work. SAM-Klang enables youth choirs to gain access to classical choral literature and ensures that mixed choirs who face challenges in finding singers for all male voice parts continue to have access to well-loved repertoire.

In Dulci Jubilo is a traditional Christmas Carol with a text that dates back to the Middle Ages. One unique aspect is the use of both Latin and German lyrics. In this setting alternative English lyrics serve in place of the German. Below is the pronunciation guide and translation for the Latin lyrics that are woven throughout. In dulci jubilo                 een     DOOL-chee      YOO-bee-lohIn sweet jubilation In praesepio;een     preh-SHE-pee-ohin a manger;Matris in gremio,MAH-trees       een     GREH-mee-ohIn his mother’s lap, Alpha es et O!AHL-fah    ehs  eht      OHYou are the Alpha and Omega! O Jesu parvule,oh       YEH-soo           PAHR-voo-lehO tiny Jesus,O puer optime;oh       POO-ehr          OHP-tee-mehO O princeps gloriae.oh       PREEN-chehps             GLOH-ree-ehO Prince of Glory. Trahe me post te.TRAH-heh        meh    pohst  tehDraw me to you. O patris caritas!oh       PAH-treehs      KAH-ree-tahsO love of the Father! O Nati lenitas!oh       NAH-tee          LEH-nee-tahsO gentleness! Per nostra crimina:pehr    NOH-strah       KREE-mee-nahby our crimes Coelorum gaudia,cheh-LOH-room            GOW-dee-ahThe joys of heaven, Qualis gloria!KWA-lees        GLOH-ree-ahWhat kind of glory! Ubi sunt gaudia,OO-bee            soont  GOW-dee-ahWhere are the joys,Nova cantica;NOH-vah          KAHN-tee-kahNew songs; In Regis curia.een     REH-jees          KOO-ree-ahIn the King’s court.  .

This five-movement work for piano, string quintet, oboe, horn, mezzo and soprano soloists, and SATB choir was commissioned in 2020 by Gary Packwood, director of choral studies at Mississippi State University, and dedicated to the Mississippi State University State Singers for the opening of the new music building. The piece is based on Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood by the English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. These writings, along with others, represent the greatest lyrics of his maturity. In these poems Wordsworth presents a fully developed yet morally flexible picture of the relationship between human beings and the natural world. When Wordsworth completed this work in 1804, he called it simply Ode, and the poem carried this title when it was published in 1807. In 1815, when the poem was republished, Wordsworth expanded the title to Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood. Intimations means hints, inklings, or indirect suggestions. Track Listing: Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood The glory and freshness of a dream Ye blessed creatures, I have heard the call Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting Full soon thy Soul shall have her earthly freight Of the eternal silence A cappella works by Michael John Trotta Justitiae Domini Ubi Caritas Dies Irae.
