Songs from Across the Water was commissioned by Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds - Phil Evans, Founder and Director. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds in 2008, giving them the tag line ‘An American Band with a British Accent’, as he wanted to combine the best of both countries’ band traditions. With this in mind, composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs, scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band’s tag line. The three movements, which are played without a break, are based on the following folk songs,which come from all corners of the British Isles: The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn, The Lark in the Clear Air and The Piper o’ Dundee & Men of Harlech. Songs from Across the Water werd geschreven in opdracht van de Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds, waarvan Phil Evans de oprichter en tevens de dirigent is. This collection of 10 Polish Folk Songs on Soldier Themes by Witold Lutoslawski, originally intended for male choir a cappella, was written in 1951. The score was published that same year by the Ministry of Defence Publishers in the series Biblioteka Muzyczna DomuWojska Polskiego no. 31. Some of the songs (numbers 4, 5, 6) were also published by PWM Edition in Krakow (1945) in the collection Pod jaworem (Under the Sycamore Tree) - a selection of Polish folk songs arranged for male choir a cappella, edited by Jozef K. Lasocki. 10 Polish Folk Songs... together with the 1951 cycle of four songs (Wyszlabym ja, Sluzba Polsce, Zelazny marsz and Naprzod idziemy) and the nine-bar Lord Tennyson Song written many years later (as an occasional gift for Robin Boyle) are the only songs written for a cappella choir by Witold Lutoslawski. Numerous questions from famous choral conductors from home and abroad persuaded me to undertake to make this edition of 10 Polish Folk Songs... for mixed choir a cappella. Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem tancolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas' mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.

2008 marked the 400th anniversary of the 1608 founding of Quebec City in Canada. The Band of Les Voltigeurs de Quebec, an infantry regiment of the Canadian forces, commissioned this piece as part of the anniversary celebrations.The folk songs of Quebec share, for obvious reasons, a history with the folk songs of France, but many can also claim to originate in Canada. All three movements of this suite use different settings of the evocative “La'-haut sur ces montagnes” as an introduction, and are then based on two popular folk songs. The first movement uses “Veillée rustique” and “Petit Jean,” the second uses “À la claire fontaine” and “Vive les matelots,” and the third is based on “C'est l'aviron” and “Au cabaret.&rdquo.

Bartók himself had the following to say about the challenges with which this genre confronted the 20th-century composer: 'Knowing how to deal with folk melodies is one of the most difficult tasks. I venture to claim that it is as difficult as, if not more difficult than, writing a large-scale original work This much is certain: for folk song arrangement the appropriateinspiration is just as essential as for the writing of any other kind of work.'
