Youve played Over the Waterfall, marched along to Soldiers Joy and perhaps even found your fortune while trotting along on that Old Spotted Pony. Now its time to take the next step; beyond the waterfall to the land of lesser-played tunes.Inside this volume are 40 challenging, unusual, interesting and dare I say- extraordinary tunes. As it includes standard notation, clawhammer banjo tablature, suggested chords and fiddle bow markings, this book is truly suitable for anyone. A number of old-time songs also include lyrics, so you can sing these great songs in the old-time style. Most of the tunes include notes about their history and recording references are provided if you wish to hear how they were played and sung way back when. I encourage you to take the time to do that. It may jump start your stalled old-time music collection or as some folks say, start you a new one.

This volume is intended as a folio of arrangements from the repertoire of a working musician. As such, there is only a minimum of discussion about the technical aspects of playing. Students who have already dealt with the American style called fingerpicking or fingerstyle guitar, which is quite distinct from other kinds of guitar playing, will be at an advantage. The easiest arrangements here are early intermediate level, while the other end of the scale includes pieces that may challenge even a professional. Tunes within each section are presented generally in order of difficulty. The bulk of the tunes presented are fiddle tunes, with a couple of banjo tunes and several songs as well as tunes originally played on other instruments such as harp, pipes, or accordion. There are even a small number composed for the guitar. For the most part, differences in approach among the tunes here are unrelated to the instrumental sources. All the tunes are presented in notation and tablature. Includes access to online audio.

This volume focuses on the medieval period from approximately the sixth to fifteenth centuries. The music of this era was traditionally performed as plainchant (sacred) or monophony (secular), that is, as a vocal melody, here reserved for the soprano recorder. Seeking to emulate medieval performance practice, the 20 tunes in this collection are accompanied by a single, drone-like power or 5-chord to be played on a modern-day stringed instrument such as guitar, mandolin or banjo. These simple troubadour songs are ideal for beginners and experienced players alike, who want to be transported back in time, immersed in a bygone era of music. .

NFMC 2016-2020 Federation Festivals Bulletin selection for Elementary I - III. When they originated, folk songs were passed along from one generation to another without written music. Many times they were sung unaccompanied. The melody of a simple accompaniment may also have been played on fiddle, guitar, banjo or whatever instrument was available. Over time, different performers made little changes in both melody and words. In some instances, there are now six or more variations of the same song. The tunes and lyrics in this book may be a little different than what is familiar to the teacher or student. Changes to music or words may certainly be made; however it is recommended that any revised notes and lyrics be written on the pages where they are used. Duet accompaniments offer many possibilities for recitals and school events. The duets help provide valuable rhythmic training and ensemble experience. The duets are recommended for use at home as well as at the lesson.
