The nine pieces in this second volume of the “Viola Recital Album” augment those appearing in volume 2 of the viola tutor. There the pieces are integrated in ascending order of difficulty, whereas the additional pieces in the “Recital Album” can be handled more freely and inserted at any point for the sake of variety. The volume contains such pieces as Carrie Williams Krogmann's “Rotkehlchens Nachtgesang” (“Robin's nocturne”) or Wilhelm Fitzenhagen's “Russisches Lied ohne Worte” (“Russian song without words”).Each piece is accompanied by duo version in which the teacher or an advanced learner can play the second part. There is also a piano part that can be played by the teacher or parents. All the pieces in the four “Viola Recital Albums” represent welcome additions to the already varied repertoire of Egon Sassmannhaus's viola tutor “Early Start on the Viola”.Kurt Sassmannshaus is the editor of many string editions in the Bärenreiter catalogue. He continues in the tradition of “Early Start on String Instruments” founded by his father, Egon Sassmannshaus. The new editions mentioned here were developed by Kurt Sassmannshaus in conjunction with his wife Melissa Lusk and his son Christoph Sassmannshaus.

The Sassmannshaus “Early Start” string methods cultivate playing together as early as possible, initially in duets. However playing in larger mixed ensembles is also encouraged and this tried-and-trusted edition for strings provides the perfect start for this. The first songs can all be performed in canon; each piece is notated in violin, viola and bass clef so that all three string instruments can play together in any number and combination. The collection then continues with through-composed pieces by such composers as Johann Valentin Rathgeber and Johann Joseph Fux. Here the middle part may optionally be performed by a viola or second violin.

Requiem is a powerfully appealing, tender exploration of love and loss. Grounded in tradition while incorporating a present-day harmonic language, two Gregorian Chant motives are interwoven throughout the lush harmonies and soaring melodies. The level of difficulty is within the reach of many choirs and most orchestral players, making it an attractive choice for church or concert hall. A new translation of the traditional text makes it possible to perform the work entirely in English or entirely in Latin. Available accompaniments for piano, organ only, organ and winds, or chamber orchestra. Whether your choir sings a major work twice a year or is looking to try a multi-movement work for the first time, it is an excellent choice for the worship space or concert hall. The work has a flexible duration (28-40 min.) depending on the inclusions optional solo and a cappella movements. 40 min. – Complete – All movements - 34 min. – Without Solo Movements (5 And 9) - 33 min. – Without Unaccompanied Movements (2 and 7) - 28 min. – Without Unaccompanied or Solo Movements (1,3,4,6,9, 10 only) There are 3 accompaniment options: Piano/Organ only; Organ and Winds (5 players + org.); Chamber Orch. (13-20 players).

Chen Yi describes the cheery interplay of HAPPY TUNE as: “When one instrument plays a livelymelody, the other plays a vivid rhythmic pattern in the accompaniment. The pair of string instrumentsimitates the sound of primitive Chinese folk song singing, as well as the Chinese traditional windinstrument sheng, a mouth pipe organ.” Published as a shared score and extracted parts, and writtenas a celebration piece honoring the 25th anniversary of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival.Composed to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, my violin and viola duet HAPPY TUNE was written for Kim Kashkashian and Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, and premiered at the festival on June 16, 2018.I fondly remember being invited by the GLCMF (directed by Prof. James Tocco) to be the dual Stone Composers-in-Residence with my husband Zhou Long, along with the Stone Composer Fellow Nicholas Omiccioli in 2011. We had a dozen of our chamber works performed excellently by the outstanding chamber ensembles and musicians during the week, meeting enthusiastic audiences and supporters of new music in various venues at the festival. The experience was truly inspiring, and I created HAPPY TUNE to honor the GLCMF, with hopes to carry on the high spirit in our new music society. In this duet, when one instrument plays a lively melody, the other plays a vivid rhythmic pattern in the accompaniment. Written in 1885, the eight songs after texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm have a special place in Richard Strauss' corpus of Lieder. For the first time, he composed an entire set of songs on texts by a single poet, collecting them into one opus that was also to appear in print. Some of the numbers in it, like Zueignung, Die Nacht, and Allerseelen, are among the most popular Strauss songs of all time, but the entire cycle with its well-planned structure is also worthy of closer examination and performance. The aspiring composer quite consciously aligns himself with the tradition ranging from Schubert to Wolf, choosing the highly Romantic subject of unrequited love and illuminating its most diverse facets. The primary source for the Henle Urtext edition is the first edition from 1887, which Strauss furnished with a dedication to the Royal Bavarian chamber singer Heinrich Vogl - a serious invitation to today's male singers not to leave these wonderful Strauss songs solely to female singers!

Originally written for string quartet, this fantastic characteristic piece from Glazunov is a welcome addition to the string orchestra repertoire, as arranged by Deborah Baker Monday. Well-suited for the more advanced ensemble, it contains excellent musical opportunities and the chance to play the music of a prominent Russian composer. Deborah's setting stays very true to the original, but enhances it for use by the full ensemble. Alert your contest/festival music committee to this worthy new piece for high school string orchestras.Alexander Glazunov (1865–1936) lived during a very transitional period of Russian music history, active as a composer, conductor, and teacher. He was a part of the Romantic school of Russian music following in the tradition of Tchaikovsky, like his fellow composers Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov.During his years at the conservatory he instructed many students who chose to pursue the modern trends set forth by Debussy. Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and even Prokofiev took instruction from Glazunov. Although they considered him old-fashioned, he was remembered as a stabilizing influence during transitional times.Glazunov’s music stayed within the category of Russian Romanticsm: nationalistic with classical formality. His list of works includes numerous symphonies, concertos, piano and vocal works, and chamber works including seven string quartets.Op. 15 was first given the title “Suite” (a collection of dances), and after a friend’s recommendation he changed the name to “Novelettes”. The five movements are of contrasting style, but beautifully reminiscent of their particular themes:I. Alla SpagnuolaII. OrientaleIII. Interludium in modo anticoIV. ValseV. All’ UnghereseThis movement is very well adaptable for string orchestra. The original string quartet moodis light, using harmonics and pizzicato, but there are forceful sections which allow for strong sectional playing (especially with the cello and bass orchestral sound). There is very much interesting melodic material offered for all instruments which lends itself to a fantastic string orchestra arrangement. Conductors will find material in all sections which provide greatopportunities for rehearsal. The form is a large ABA with a D.C. al fine, but the sections are not square by any means. There is lots of energy and momentum in the material of both sections, as well as a modalcharacter which gives the music an exotic sound. Bowing patterns abound in all sections formore great teaching opportunities.
