German composer and Horn player, Franz Strauss (1822-1905) is the Father of the great Richard Strauss on whom he was a huge influence. Remembered for a significant contribution to the Horn repertoire, Franz Strauss' Goodbyes remains prominent in concert and recital programmes. Born in Bavaria, Strauss was principal Horn player for the Bavarian Court Opera for more than 40 years, as well as a teacher at the Royal School of Music in Munich. Goodbyes was among the composer's earlier compositions. The piece is a Romance, meaning it is highly lyrical. Strauss' work addresses chromaticism, variety in key signatures and articulation as well as semiquaver flourishes and ornamentation. Goodbyes is a sublime work for Horn and Piano, suitable for advanced players..

While some goodbyes are temporary, and others more permanent, this lovely flowing lyrical work for band helps capture the range of those feelings of farewell in music. Haunting and somber melodies give way to an uplifting chorale, and a poignant and slightly unsettled conclusion remind us of how our farewells reach so deeply into the soul. An excellent selection for development of blend, balance, intonation, and musicianship, A Song Of Goodbye will be an outstanding choice for festival and concert performances.
