It is not widely known that the popular composer Petr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was also a music critic, nor that he was professor of musical theory and harmony, instrumentation and free composition at the Moscow Conservatoire (1866-1878). His teaching there bore fruit in the form of the 'Manual for the practical mastering of harmony' printed in Moscow in 1872. This textbook played an important part in Russian musical training: it was written before the manuals by Rimsky-Korsakoff and Arensky and is thus the very first originally Russian book of harmonic theory, which may be of interest and of some use to readers today.

Harri Viitanen's three passions are the organ, nature and the stars, and he combines the first two of these in Images d'oiseaux. The birdsongs which function as an important element in the work were studied from recordings made in the vicinity of Viitanen's home: they are the nightingale, pied fly-catcher, blackbird and great tit. The work is written for a three or four-manual instrument with the addition of two clicking stones which contribute to the birdsong effects.

This is an approachable and affecting setting of a devotional poem by the revered Carmelite nun St Thérèse of Lisieux (1873–97). The choral writing, marked 'placid', comprises simple four-part homophony. The organ part weaves a limpid, measured monophonic line, representing the lyre of the poem, and is scored for manuals, save for one sustained pedal note. The piece slowly builds from its soft commencement to a fortissimo climax at 'consume away' before falling away to soft, unison monotones for the final line.
