''Learning the piano is so widespread these days and good pianists so numerous that mediocrity on the instrument can no longer be accepted. In effect, the piano must be studied for eight or ten years before performance of a harder piece is attempted. Few can spare the years for this. It takes one hour to play the volume in full. Once it has been mastered, it is enough to set aside for it a little time each day and the difficulties will disappear almost like magic. Playing will become as attractive, accurate, fluent and pearly as that of the best performers.'' This piano method by the French music teacher Charles-Louis Hanon (1819-1900) appeared in 1874, with these introductory wordsaddressed to the realm of pianists. Almost a century and a half later, it remains among the most popular systems of piano tuition all around the world, and Hanon's name has become generic for systematic instrumental methods, even in types of popular music. The Virtuoso Pianist appears as a publication in six languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Hungarian. The volume in a new, decorative cover is useful to every pianist. Students with a years study behind them will succeed in mastering the exercises. Advanced pianists after working through the exercises will be able to tackle even serious technicaldifficulties. In the volume different forms of technical difficulty are encountered. The exercises may be performed on more than one piano simultaneously, so that students become accustomed to ensemble playing.

The three volumes of Années de pèlerinage (‘Pilgrim Years’) are among Liszt‘s most important compositions for piano solo. From dramatic-virtuoso to pensive-romantic music, the 29 ‘travel pieces’ represent the complete range of Liszt‘s compositional expression.
For the first time, this first volume of the trilogy, Suisse (Switzerland) is published together with the Trois Morceaux suisses, in line with the composer’s original intention to combine all his Swiss-inspired character pieces into a single volume. The musical journey is supported by the inclusion of historical illustrations of the scenes and landscapes that inspired the composer.
Edited by world-renowned Liszt expert and concert pianist Leslie Howard, the edition also contains Liszt’s original fingerings.

Clara Schumann (née Wieck) was undoubtedly the most important female pianist of the 19th century. As a young child she toured Europe as a prodigy: her entire career as a celebrated piano virtuoso spanned more than 60 years. Equally important, but less well known, is the composer Clara Schumann, who published her Opus 1 at the age of eleven. Despite the domestic duties expected of a woman at that time, she created numerous outstanding piano works and songs that are at least the equal of those of her male contemporaries. However, society at that time did not allow women to be regarded as fully-fledged composers or for their works to be appreciated adequately. To help give this important composer the recognition she deserves, Edition Peters, in collaboration with the Schumann-Haus Leipzig, is now, on the occasion of her 200th birthday, publishing this Anniversary Songbook for High Voice. The 14 songs, representing the pinnacle of Clara's art, were composed mainly in the period after her marriage in Leipzig to Robert Schumann - who was her greatest champion. This volume includes:

Frederic Chopin's Piano Concertos in e minor op. 11 and f minor op. 21 were written when the composer had just barely entered his twenties. Since he needed effective, virtuoso works for his major concert appearances with orchestral accompaniment, he decided to simply write them himself. Although it is clear that the piano part always holds center stage in these pieces, Chopin never degrades the orchestra by turning it into a stereotypical cue-giver. This is confirmed by the imaginatively orchestrated tutti transition in the first movement, the lengthy string tremolo in the middle movement and the col legno passage in the finale. The first performance of the f-minor concerto took place in Warsaw on 17 March 1830. The first edition of the score was published in 1879 by Breitkopf & Hartel in Leipzig. The present edition for two pianos by Ignaz Friedmann was first issued in 1913 in the framework of the 12-volume Chopin edition for which the Polish pianist undertook a careful evaluation of the sources.

This virtuoso etude has been given the nickname “Black Key Study†by pianists, since, apart from one single F in m. 66, the right hand does not touch a single white key. This gives the harmony a pentatonic, almost Debussy-an character, and has most certainly contributed to its great popularity. Those who are not ready to tackle the complete volume of Chopin Etudes (HN 124) will be well served by this separate Urtext edition.
