A brief introduction leads to a majestic theme in the clarinets, supported by pounding percussion beats, before the brass section takes up the theme in a quicker, heroic fashion. In Statue of Liberty the French composer Thierry Deleruyelledepicts the grandeur and sheer scale of the statue, which was created in his homeland as a gift to the United States. This three-movement work is a tribute to French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The first movement depicts what is without a doubt Bartholdi’s most famous sculpture, the Statue of Liberty in New York, which also gives this piece its name. Next listeners get to experience the trumpeting angels, which can be seen atop the First Baptist Church in Boston. The final movement takes listeners to France to view the Lion of Belfort in France. Liberty: in één woord imposant! Liberty Fanfare follows the successful pattern that John Williams has made his own in a series of ceremonial fanfares. The grandeur and energy that are heard in this exciting short work form a juxtaposition and eventual combination of lively fanfare figures together with a broader theme. It’s concise form and simple directness makes a bold opening statement for any concert. Die Freiheitsstatue im New Yorker Hafen wurde am 28. Oktober 1886 eingeweiht.

Inspired by the many hardships of the Irish immigrants, this piece brings hope of a new world, a new lease on life and a second chance. The piece begins with the sound of the ocean in the background (played by the ocean drum) while a solo flute plays the main theme. As the piece develops the theme represents several scenes: first, the knowledge that life needs to change due to the famine and hardships of the time; second, the immigrants begin their move to America; third, the arrival in America and seeing the statue of Liberty, which is the climactic moment of the piece; and finally, ending with the same idea in the beginning of the piece but now as memory and longing for Ireland.

Written for conductor Judith Clurman, David Ludwig sets the poem found on The Statue of Liberty in a moving and passionate style. The sentiment of “welcome” that poet Lazarus – herself an immigrant – conveys is sensitive and at the same time powerful and David has skillfully captured this emotion. Beginning in a somber, chant-like unison, it opens to harmony at the most famous line “I lift my lamp, beside the Golden Door” repeating this line in a crescendo to the end. It was performed at the 2013 Inauguration Prayer Service at St. John's Church in Washington, D.C.
