This concerto has the unusual addition of an optional male voice choir. Many Russian elements influenced Bryars when he was writing the piece, not least the text for the bass voices which is taken from Glinkas song cycle Farewell to St Petersburg. Bryars writes The orchestration is quite light throughout, so that the singing quality of the double bass can emerge. The emphasis in terms of tessitura is on the middle register, though in the closing section there is a passage in natural harmonics. Although the piece is not designed to be a virtuoso showpiece, there is a brief cadenza in which the soloist is supported at times by other solo instruments (bass clarinet, viola, cello, bass)..

In 1785, Mozart repeatedly visited the Viennese Freemasons Lodge Zur wahren Eintracht, where on 12 August Carl von Konig was elevated to the rank of a Master. It was fort his ceremony that Mozart composed the Meistermusik (Master Music) for mens chorus and orchestra. The score does not contain the choral parts, perhaps because they were doubled by the oboe I and clarinet parts, a pecularity undoubtedly suited to the singing capacity of the Lodge members. From a detailed analyses of the work and of the Freemasons practices, on can infer that the text was drawn from the third Lamentation of Jeremiah. Mozart at least entered the correct date of composition of the Master Music in his own work catalogue, namely Jully (1785).For a performance without chorus which most probably took place on 9 December 1785, Mozart added three new, low wind parts which emphasize the gloomy mood of the work. In a mixture of cantata and concert piece, Beethoven set a hymn to art in his Choral Fantasy. The work, about 20 minutes in length, is often seen as a precursor to the Ode to Joy in the 9th Symphony. After a piano introduction, a dialog between piano and orchestra develops in the space of just 400 measures, before the soloists and chorus enter for the last 200 measures. (If necessary, the solo parts can be sung by members of the chorus or a semi-chorus.) In the main section, headed Finale (beginning with the double basses and celli), the theme from Beethoven's early song Gegenliebe (WoO 118, also used in the Ode to Joy) is presented, varied and finally used in the March in F major. The main source of the Choral Fantasia for the edition is the first edition of the parts, published in 1811 and corrected by Beethoven; alongside this an English edition of the parts published by Clementi (1810) has been consulted for comparison. With a total duration of about 30 minutes, Schubert's Mass in B flat major (D 324), written in 1815, is considerably longer than Mozart's and Haydn's classical Brevis masses, and its large instrumental ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani even gives it a clearly solemn character. Overall, Schubert was inspired by the late Haydn style of the symphonic mass (e.g., the division into six large movements, the omission of arias for the vocal soloists who are instead juxtaposed with the choir, singing short passages either singly or as a group) without, of course, achieving its temporal expansion. This is a representative, musically appealing work that excels with its multi-layered, detailed text treatment. It is, therefore, suitable for special occasions and the high feasts of the church year and can be mastered well by experienced church choirs.
