Our goal is to be helpful to all music teachers who engage in musical experiences with students every day, in ways that are historically and culturally relevant. It could serve as an undergraduate textbook in music methods courses, or as supplementary text in graduate music education curriculum or psychology of music learning courses. — Frank Abrahams and Ryan John With the help of a team of educators with a wide diversity of experience, Frank Abrahams and Ryan John explore how music educators best empower students of all ages to be musical. The goal of Becoming Musical is to ensure that through school music, students respond and evaluate music in ways informed by critical thinking, feeling, and acting. Written for in-service music teachers, music education students, and practicing teachers, this practical companion to Planning Instruction in Music offers in-depth exploration of musical understanding, musical agency, and learning styles. In Part I, the authors address global themes that contribute to musical literacy and creativity, including what it means to be musical, allowing for and developing student agency, matching learning styles with pedagogical approaches, and the genesis and implementation of the authors’ highly successful Collaborative Solfeggio. In Part II, thirteen experienced teachers share approaches to developing musicality, drawing on pedagogical methods by Dalcroze, Gordon, Kodály, Orff, and Suzuki while expanding topics to include music therapy, yoga, composition, improvisation, and using popular music. In Part III, twelve musicians address the needs of music-makers from the elementary music classroom through adulthood. Adding to approaches discussed in Part II, the authors show how to use social media, music theory, movement, and technology in band, choir, orchestra, and with young musicians. Sample lesson and rehearsal plans make this practical and helpful, guiding students toward Becoming Musical.

The number of Spanish-speaking students in the United States continues to grow dramatically, leaving many English-speaking teachers—especially music teachers—searching for tools to effectively bridge the communication gap. In Spanish for Music Teachers, authors Jacob Prosek and Heidi Nelson draw from their studies abroad and years of classroom experience to present practical, ready-to-use strategies, vocabulary, repertoire, and reproducible materials for K–12 music educators who serve English Language Learner (ELL) populations. The authors provide an overview of ELL instruction, including insights into ELL terminology and an explanation of the ELL program models present in schools today. They also recommend easy-to-implement ELL strategies that will significantly improve the music classroom for all students. Throughout the book, teachers will find hundreds of practical Spanish words and phrases—alongside their English translations—that cover everything from specific musical terms and instructions to basic conversational Spanish. Additionally, Prosek and Nelson provide bilingual vocabulary cards ready-made for photocopying and convenient templates of bilingual letters to send home. The authors also dedicate three chapters to selecting repertoire with the ELL student in mind. Prosek and Nelson discuss how to choose linguistically and culturally diverse songs, and they include a carefully selected list of fifteen Spanish songs and fifteen English songs—complete with music notation, teaching suggestions, and translations—to put to use in the classroom right away. Designed for music teachers with any level of experience with Spanish, Spanish for Music Teachers is the perfect music curriculum companion. This much-needed resource equips teachers with the practical tools to immediately make a significant and lasting impact on all students. Jacob Prosek is a general music teacher and choir conductor in Lombard, Illinois, and Heidi Nelson is a fourth grade Spanish Dual Language teacher in Naperville, Illinois.

Help your students Level Up! their sight-reading skills using their minds and ears, as well their voices! Level Up! is a sequential, interactive, and comprehensive resource built from the authors’ decades of research and experience teaching students of all levels and ages. Using the concept of target skills (isolated pitch and rhythm patterns), Level Up! guides students to carefully understand and analyze every new skill by difficulty. Authors Michele L. Henry and Keitha Lucas Hamann then reinforce each skill by asking students to sight-read specially sequenced practice melodies. Each of the five volumes—Foundational, Emerging, Minor, Developing, and Advanced—is designed as an interactive workbook for students to mark up, and is available in both treble clef and bass clef editions. The companion Teacher Manuals include clear instructions for how to best use the Level Up! system, outline the approach and sequencing, and provide assessments. Level Up! supports the artistic literacy goals of the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) and many state music education standards. The companion website, giamusic.com/levelup, provides even more reinforcement. The goal of Level Up! is simple: to help students become independent and confident musicians, with benefits to last a lifetime! Michele L. Henry, Ph.D. is Professor of Choral Music Education at Baylor University, Waco, Texas. Keitha Lucas Hamann, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.  Level Up! is the most sequential approach to the teaching of sight-reading that I’ve ever seen! Designed for use with singers at the middle school through high school levels, the methodology aligns with National Standards, UIL, and TEKS, and is range related for developing voices. Within each lesson, specific skills are targeted and the interactive approach further encourages the mastery of skills. Individual assessment is provided both for long-term and short-term goals, thus creating a complete and accessible methodology which can be used in any choral or general music classroom. —Lynne Gackle, Director of Choral Activities, Baylor University This book fills a unique niche in the field. I love that it takes the needs of developing/changing voice singers into account and that students can write in the books like a workbook as they are learning the tools for sight singing. Teachers will definitely appreciate the opportunities for assessment built into the series. —Jessica Nápoles, Associate Professor of Choral Music Education, University of North Texas As a teacher, I really do love this resource. It’s broken down in a way that makes it very easy to incorporate into my lessons, and the fact that it’s sequential and very clear about the concepts introduced at each level is extremely helpful. I can see my students (beginners especially) getting better and more confident with their sight-reading. I look forward to using this resource as our primary sight-reading resource! —Courtney Neva, Choir Director, Dripping Springs High School.

Aural Matters in Practice provides a set of aural training exercises based on the tracks of its companion CD, The Essential Hyperion, for use in the preparation of students for advanced music examinations. It is designed to supplement the materials in Part II of Aural Matters (Schott ED 12430) by same authors. The seminal Aural Matters is primarily a resource to help students improve their own aural perception and stylistic awarness of music. Aural Matters in Practice has been written at the request of many teachers seeking additional materials to use in classes or study groups, both to monitor progress and to provide further practice in working formal tests. The books has accordingly been designed with space for students' responses and with model answers (plus suggested marks and a scheme of work) printed on the centre folios for easy removal if desired. The 28 tests are complementary to those in Aural Matters; some encompass related musical material while others provide the opportunity to investigate styles and genres that were only touched upon in the original volume.
