1st perf: Douglas Mitchell, Clare Hall, Cambridge, 26 October 2002 Morgan Hayes's Totem, for B flat clarinet, is a short, single melodic line that in its brief duration challenges players of Grades 7 or 8 standard or above to encompass widely contrasted dramatic and lyrical moods within the primitive vision of its title. The composer had no specific ethnological source in mind when composing this piece. Rather, his aim was to suggest the complex rhythms and rituals of tribal life, remote in time from the sophistications of the modern world, but in spirit closer perhaps to our own than we might care to imagine.

Commissioned by the College Band Directors' Association, Songs Without Words includes five short movements, each a musical exploration of a specific mood (1. Manic, 2. Reflective, 3. Giddy, 4. Stunned , 5. Confident), as expressed by winds, brass, and percussion. The finale quotes themes from the previous movements, then, says Welcher, ends in a bouyant cloud of optimism. A Klezmer Wedding by Mike Curtis is a set of four dances, newly-composed but based on traditional models. The Doina is an expressive chant for three successive soloists; it twists and turns with the wailing lament of a shepherd's pipe. Next follows the Hora, a slow Rumanian dance in three with a mood that reflects the wedding's solemn vows. A Chusidl, with a moderate speed and bouncy rhythms, gets the party to the dance floor. The concluding Freylach (happy, but still in a minor key) takes the bride, groom, and guests to the edge of frenzy.

One of the finest Finnish chamber works of recent years involving a clarinet is Mikko Heinio's Treno della notte for clarinet, cello and piano (2000). The composer says of his work: I wanted to write a long, fairly fast-moving composition proceeding without a break in which the moods are at least to some extent dream-like, nocturnal. May 'Treno della notte', the term for a night train in Italian, be a tribute to my much-admired Federico Fellini and Marcello Mastroianni, who in the film Citta della donne (City of Women) falls asleep on a train and is led by a representative of the stronger sex along the most fantastic paths. During a journey lasting a good 17 minutes the listener has time to proceed through 12 connected carriages: the composition has five calm, melodic sequences and four rhythmically dashing dances. It begins with an Introduzione, has a Transitio in the middle and ends with a Coda. In addition to its nocturnal shades, the Heinio work is of sizzling virtuosity, hot Latin rhythms and glowing, sustained melody. The clarinettist plays both a normal B flat instrument and a bass clarinet, thus enriching the timbral scale even further. Heinio does not expect the clarinettist to improvise or to master novel techniques, but otherwise the clarinet part is as challenging as many a concerto.

Commissioned by the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University, my two-movement trio Tibetan Tunes is written for the New Pacific Trio (Igor Veligan, violin, Nina Flyer, cello, and Sonia Leong, piano) and premiered at the Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific on Jan. 27, 2007 in Stockton, California. The first movement is inspired by a Tibetan folk tune Du Mu played on a recorder Xiongling. The music presents the rich gestures of Du Mu (a name of a god in Tibetan Buddhism) in a serene mood. Dui Xie is a kind of Tibetan folk ensemble music with a same tune in the introduction and the coda, played with the plucking instrument Zhamunie, the bamboo flute and the fiddle Erhu, often performed with singing and tap dancing. The pitch materials of the second movement Dui Xie are drawn from the folk ensemble music and a lyrical Tibetan folk song Amaliehuo. The work is adapted for clarinet (in B-flat), cello and piano, under the request of clarinetist, Prof. Zhu Shuang of Hainan University, to be premiered in December 2019 in Hainan University, Haikou City, Hainan Province, China.

For chamber ensemble (2 clarinets in B flat, percussion (marimba, bodhran), piano, viola, and cello) On Claudy Banks is a quiet response to the musical and lyrical content of a traditional folk song of the same name about a woman mourning the supposed loss of her lover at war with the Spanish. Hymn-like outer sections are balanced by a somewhat sinister, brooding central section but the overriding mood of the piece is one of peaceful melancholy.
