This collection of sheet music by the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius features 24 of his most enjoyable and influential pieces, all newly-arranged especially for this volume. The tonal innovations and idiosyncratic compositional style of this hugely prolific composer truly does illustrate the genuine Joy Of Sibelius. The pieces by Sibelius included in this collection exhibit the influences that he absorbed as well as his own stylistic developments. Sibelius' music was highly individual, finding influence in nature and poetry, as well as other composers such as Wagner, Bruckner and Tchaikovsky. Many of his most famous works are included here, featuring Danse Élégiaque, the 5 Morceaux Romantiques, Op.101 and the finale of his Symphony No.5, Op.82. Other pieces like selections from the 13 Morceaux, Impromptu, Op.78 No.1, Romance, Op.78 No.2, Suite Caractèristique, Op.100 and The Fiddler brilliantly encapsulate what makes Sibelius' compositions so wonderful. His tone poems, ideas about the thematic nature of symphonies and his musical contributions to the Finnish national identity have made him one of the most popular 20th century composers, with time and retrospect dismissing some contemporary critics' opinions of him. With 2015 coinciding with Sibelius' 150th birthday, now is the perfect time to discover one of the giants of symphonic music, or to rediscover a favourite of many pianists. In the meantime, piano experts tend to confirm Glenn Gould's view that Sibelius made an important contribution to the slim piano repertoire of the late romantic period. With the anthology Jean Sibelius: Piano Pieces compiled for the Sibelius Year 2015 (150th birthday), the Finnish composer has finally made it into the ranks of the piano composers. Kari Kilpelainen and Anna Pulkkis, the editors of the Complete Edition, have selected the most important pieces from all creative periods. The altogether four volumes of the Sibelius Complete Edition impressively refute the composer's self-doubts about the significance of his piano works.

The Sonata op. 12 is the largest of Sibeliuss piano works. Sibelius may have composed it in the summer of 1893. The second movement comes from a work originally planned for male choir to a text from the Finnisch national epic Kalevala. Something of its character my still have shaped the final outcome, with its restless opening bars, sparkling writing in the pianos high register, the calming homophonic passages, and soothing arpeggio writing. The first public performance took place on April 17, 1895, in the Solennity Hall of Helsinki University. The first edition was published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1906. Over and beyond the excellent music text, this volumes contains an extensive preface by Sibelius expert Kari Kilpelainen.
