In two volumes, Timothy Roberts has selected duets by leading composers from the period following the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660. For Soprano (or Tenor) and Bass, the volume contains six items featuring the main preoccupations of Restoration art: the dramatic and contemplative sides of religion; love anticipated and requited or rejected; and alcohol. The basso continuo has been realised in simple style for keyboard, and players should elaborate or alter it as they wish. The Four Duets, BWV 802-805 are part of a larger collection, the Clavier-ubung III sometimes called the German Organ Mass. They were first published in 1739, mostly likely intended to be performed on the organ, as they have a range from C2 to C6; playable on almost any organ from that era. However, they could have been performed on any keyboard of the time. Musically they are more complex than the Two Part Inventions, and their purpose was most likely to take two-part counterpoint to the max. * Fugue 1 is a double fugue in E minor * Fugue 2 is a fugue in F major written as a da capo aria (ABA) * Fugue 3 in G major is light and dance-like * Fugue 4 in A minor is a fugue in strict counterpoint Ralph Sauer has once again done an extraordinary job of finding great music for our instrument and transcribing it in the most beautiful way possible. Appropriate for advanced performers. Each player has their own part as well as a study score. The 2nd part may be performed on a tenor with f-attachment or a bass trombone.

At the time Gervais composed his Grand Motet Miserere he held a post as director of the Chappell Royale in the Court of Louis XIV. This was one of the most important positions in music in France at that time. In addition to operas, he was highly regarded for compositions in this representative genre of sacred music until the end of the Ancien Regime. The setting of Psalm 50 consists of a succession of individual movements (choruses, soli, and duets through quartets), which, thanks to his experience with works for the stage, the composer was able shape dramatically not only with respect to the texts of individual movements, but also with a view to the large chorus which concludes the work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2101000.

This nine-movement psalm composition allows all the participants to shine, in some cases with rich virtuosity: the string ensemble in the opening Sonata; the solo singers and choir in the chaconne-like first vocal movement, Singet dem Herrn; also the solo singers in two duets (alto + tenor, soprano + alto), an alto solo and an extensive bass solo; the choir in two further movements - a fugue on the 6th verse of the psalm Es stehet herrlich und prachtig fur ihm and the concluding movement in two sections, Betet an den Herrn, which ends with a brilliant fugue on Es furchte ihn alle Welt. This is a festive sacred work suitable for many occasions (including weekday Epiphany psalm services and for services on the 4th Sunday after Easter). The present edition presents the source material in revides form, transcribed into current editorial and performance usage. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3912400.
