Symphonie for Band

Commissioned for the University of Akron Symphonic Band this dynamic work celebrates 100 years of music composed for the Olympic Games. Based on three primary themes the first is a brilliant fanfare that serves as an introduction as well as a unifying link throughout. Second is the 1896 Olympic Hymn (music by Spyros Samaras) set in a beautiful lyric style which builds to a magnificent climax juxtaposed with the opening fanfare. The final section presents a new version of Mr. Curnow's own Olympic Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag which was commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and performed again in 2000. Free Running is an exciting high velocity tour-de-force that will keep both musicians and the audience on the edge of their seats. Inspiration for the work came from the pointillistic paintings of Seurat (who createdimages by using tiny spots of primary colors on his canvas) and from Parkour a form of urban acrobatics in which participants known as free runners use the structures of the rural landscape to perform catlike leaps and sprints.The resulting creation is a non-stop piece of music made up of only staccato notes in a constant rhythm moving through different sections of the ensemble. Free Running was commissioned by the Troy University Symphony Bandfor the 2011 Alabama Music Educators Association Convention. (2011)Lost Vegas (by Grammy®-winning composer Michael Daugherty) was commissioned by the University of Michigan Symphony Band and the University of Miami Wind Ensemble. It is a swinging tribute to an earlierepoch when legendary entertainers like Elvis Presley Peggy Lee Esquivel Bobby Darin Stan Kenton and Frank Sinatra's “Rat Pack” performed in the intimate swanky showrooms of the Sands Tropicana and Flamingohotels in Las Vegas Nevada. Torn down long ago the cozy nightclubs – where the Rat Pack once performed edgy material – have been replaced by large arenas where commercialized family entertainment is now presented.Daugherty's composition for symphonic band is a trip down Memory Lane to an adventurous and vibrant Vegas that once was – and returns if only for a moment in Lost Vegas. Created in 1994 ReBoot was the first completely computer-animated television series and become a hit worldwide. The setting is in the inner world of a computer system known as ?Mainframe? ? a stunninguniverse where goodconstantly fights the forces of evil. This exciting innovative new work from Robert Buckley was commissioned by the Troy University Symphony Band in honor of the 37th annual Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic in Alabama. Using a recurring two-measureloop this uniquely constructed piece is built up around various musical building blocks that are constantly evolving and transforming. The music is dramatic and dynamic with full-blown ensemble passages suddenly dropping toquiet powerful moments without ever losing the music's continuous drive. Following an exotic bluesy middle section the piece builds accelerating to a thrilling rhythmic percussive finish. A real tour de force! Dur: 7:00

The Unknown Journey fut commandé par le Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band un orchestre d?harmonie établi en 1954 qui est désormais l?un des meilleurs orchestres universitaires du Japon. Le compositeur choisit ce titre puisque pendantle développement du morceau il semblait créer son propre élan commençant lentement et accélérant continuellement. Vers la fin il devient progressivement semblable aux dernières mesures de La Valse de Ravel un morceau qui caractériseparfaitement l?idée d?élan irrépressible.

WINNER OF BASCA S 2012 BRITISH COMPOSER AWARD FOR WIND OR BRASS BAND.A Symphony of Colours was commissioned by the Fairey Band with assistance from the John Golland Trust. The first performance was given on 2 May 2011 during the European Brass Band Championships Montreux Switzerland by The Fairey Band conducted by Russell Gray. The same band gave the UK première on 29 January 2012 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass Manchester. The title of this substantial work relates to the rare condition of Synesthesia where sufferers see colours or smell scent in response to hearing music. One of the most famous musicians who had thiscondition was Olivier Messiaen to whom this dramatic piece is a homage. Dobson s music incorporates sideways glances towards Messiaen s great organ work L Ascension. The Symphony s four movements which merge seamlessly into a single span are Joy Chroma (which is a journey through Dobson s own perception of Synesthesia) Endless Time (where tuned percussion features alongside extended solos for the euphonium) and the final climactic Ascent.Dobson s A Symphony of Colours which was conceived as a virtuoso work for elite brass bands.

G. Schirmer Autograph Edition-Composer John Harbison writes: 'Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk's 'Ruby My Dear' which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piecereflecting my first musical passions my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes I chose to make a version of Monk's tune first in a chamber-musical contrapuntal manner then inthe grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.' Opening with a solemn procession that quickly transforms into a brilliant march the piece continues to build in intensity up to the final closing chords. A dynamic transcription for intermediate bands.

for flute and clarinet-Dimitri Chostakovitch (1906-1975) fut un compositeur et pianiste russe. Sa personnalité novatrice s?affirma très tôt avec ses deux premières symphonies et son opéra Le Nez (1928). En 1936 il achève la composition de son second opéra Lady Macbeth qui fut violemment critiqué dans la Pravda. Chostakovitch devint ainsi officiellement un 'ennemi du peuple' accusation qui dans l?URSS des années 30 précédait bien souvent une déportation. Il est hanté par des idées de suicide qui ne cesseront de le tourmenter toute sa vie. La Symphonie n° 4 (1935-1936) est le reflet de son état psychologique de l?époque. Cette œuvre bouleversante ne sera créée qu?un 1961.Selon la version officielle Chostakovitch retira de lui-même son œuvre la jugeant imparfaite. Mais il est bien plus vraisemblable qu?il ait cédé à des pressions exercées par des hautes instances. Obligé de faire des concessions Chostakovitch donne à sa musique des accents plus traditionnels. Chostakovitch est l?auteur d?une abondante production : opéras ballets musiques de film oratorios concertos symphonies musique de chambre etc.La carrière de compositeur pour le cinéma débute en 1929 avec La Nouvelle Babylone et se poursuit toute sa vie durant jalonnée de succès comme la trilogie La Jeunesse de Maxime le Retour de Maxime et Du côté de Viborg (1934-1938) qui valut au compositeur le Prix Staline. Cette valse est extraite de la musique du film La Jeunesse de Maxime. Ed Keeley en a réalisé un bel arrangement pour un duo Flûte traversière et Clarinette et Orchestre d?Harmonie.
