Suite for Two Guitars

Par CHOSTAKOVITCH DIMITRI. Shostakovich composed a wide variety of music. His music includes Symphonies, String Quartets, Concertos, Sonatas, Film Music and Jazz inspired pieces. In this publication we feature the very famous Waltz No.2 from his “Suite for Variety Orchestra” arranged for guitar quartet by Michel Démarez. Familiar to many as the title music to the movie “Eyes Wide Shut”, Dmitri Shostakovich's Waltz No. 2 – which is better known as Jazz Suite No. 2 – has mysterious and lascivious qualities that call to mind circus or variety music. Michel Démarez has arranged this dramatic Russian performance piece for four guitars, thus adding another well-known classic to the instrumental literature available. 'This music grew out of necessity. A large number of guitarists with a wide range of technical ability were brought together as an ensemble to be trained in as musical a way as possible By writing parts from the 4th to the 1st progressively more demanding the idea of ensemble playing has proved not only successful musically but also technically accommodating; therefore this material should be ideally suited for class tuition. The absence of fingering is intentional; on closer acquaintance with the music players should experiment with various fingerings. Dynamics noted in the score are only suggestions which can be altered according to individualtaste. The possibilities for interesting and exciting colours and sonorities are almost inexhaustible and should be one of the more appealing aspects of such music-making. If this music succeeds in bringing more guitarists out of isolation and under the same roof as it has done in the experience of the composer then it can be considered as a decisive step forward in the development of the Guitar as a 'musical' instrument'. - Gilbert E. Music Of 4 Centuries Arranged For 3 Guitars-Mary Criswick (1945-2004) was a British guitarist and composer. In Guitar Trios (1975) she arranged music from 4 different centuries for 3 Guitars creating a suite of works that are great asindividual concert items or performed as a whole set. A wide range of styles are covered from Tudor music right up to the turn of the 20th century.

In the tripartite 'Cowboy Suite' Alan Laken takes us to the Wild West the domain of cowboys indians trappers and other fortune hunters. Around 1890 the west coast of America was reached which in effect meant the end of the Wild West. Its stories however survived and have been a source of inspiration for many books films and of course music. Some characters such as Jesse James Billy the Kid and Buffalo Bill are forever linked to these tales. In the 'Cowboy Suite' we first hear the 'Hoedown'. At the end of an exhausting workday the labourers used to lay down their tools among others the 'hoes' and spontaneously began to play music on the instruments which they then possessed (guitars fiddles and banjos) and to dance. After being jolted on the 'Wagon Trail' we reach the third part the 'Cowboy Roundup'. In this last part it becomes clear that as a cattle driver it is imperative to stay firmly seated in the saddle. As the cattle are rounded up i.e. driven together spectacular things happen.
