Comme tout professeur de piano, je suis continuellement en quête d’idées pour motiver les jeunes et moins jeunes élèves à la découverte de l’instrument.Le répertoire pour Piano Quatre Mains accessible aux débutants est assez restreint. L’écriture pianistique en ce genre doit prendre en compte une faible technique pianistique et des notions de solfège en cours d’apprentissage, sans que tout cela ne nuise au rendu musical.C’est pourquoi j’ai eu l’idée de créer ce recueil « grands débutants », attentif à ces difficultés, recueil où tout jeune pianiste peut aborder dès son premier cours, avec son professeur ou un autre élève, une pièce à Quatre Mains. L’expérience, appliquée en premier lieu avec mes élèves, est réellement enrichissante : elle révèle l’importance du rythme, renforce la musicalité, la motivation, et surtout, amène le partage de la musique et l’écoute de l’autre.Comme anecdote…j’ai donné à un élève de six ans, qui en était à son deuxième cours, l’étude d’une des premières pièces de ce recueil. Rapidement acquise, je lui ai dit que nous allions la jouer ensemble à quatre mains. Elle se caractérise ici par des changements de tempi lents à rapides. Le fait de ralentir ou d'accélérer est typique dans le folklore musical hongrois. Aucune monotonie ne s'en découle. Ces airs sont transfigurés par Brahms où les couleurs folkloriques vacillent frénétiquement à travers ces divers changements musicaux.

Debussy commence à composer en 1906 ce petit recueil plein de féérie, une dédicace à sa fille Claude-Emma, plus connue sous le surnom de Chouchou, en 1908. C'est cette même année que le recueil est publié chez les éditions Durand, avec une couverture originale et plaisante faite par le compositeur lui-même. La première écoute officielle est créée au Cercle Musical à Paris le 18 décembre 1908 par Harold Bauer. Quelques années plus tard, Children's Corner est retranscrit pour orchestre par le compositeur André Caplet. Son audition est conduite par Debussy lui-même le 25 mars 1911. Bien que ces six petites suites soient dédicacées à sa fille avec les mots suivants : « A ma très chère petite Chouchou, avec les tendres excuses de son père pour ce qui va suivre », elles ne s'adressent pas à des mains d'enfants. Car elles possèdent, pour certaines, des difficulté techniques inaccessibles pour de très jeunes éxécutants.Les six pièces ont toutes un titre anglais, peut être faut-il y voir une aimable moquerie à l'anglomanie dominante de cette époque :1) Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum2)Jimbo's Lullaby (Berceuse des éléphants)3)Serenade for the doll (Sérénade à la poupée)4)The snow is dancing (La neige danse)5)The litthe shepherd (Le petit berger)6)Golliwogg's cake-walk Golliwogg's Cake-walk (allegro giusto, mi bémol à 2/4) est la pièce la plus célèbre du recueil, surnommée par le pianiste Alfred Cortot « Ataxique et dégingandée ». Elle représente l'apothéose finale de ce recueil. Il faut noter que le terme Cake-Wake correspond à une danse noire américaine et le mot Golliwogg représente une poupée de nègre en étoffe.Debussy emprunte pour la première fois la musique jazz pour exprimer la danse des gestes articulés et saccadés de cette poupée nègre. Au milieu du Cake-Walk, il cite à demi-ironique les premières mesures de Tristan de Wagner en indiquant une annotation piquante : « avec une grande émotion »! puis reprend une deuxième citation dans l'accord final.Grà ce à cette pièce pleines d'effets musicaux et de contre temps rythmiques, le pianiste interprète développera un touché nuancé, de la sensibilité et de l'imagination dans l'éxécution pour faire vivre une oeuvre sautillante très originale.

J'aime les formes musicales concises telles que le Prélude et la Fugue, où il y a une idée claire et directe, suivie d'une autre plus complexe et développée.Conformément à cette idée, cette œuvre se compose de deux pièces distinctes, la première - Transfigured Life - vise à attirer l'auditeur avec son rythme rapide et dansant et sa partie de violon simple et mélodique. Il se «transfigure» via quelques courts intermèdes au piano solo en seulement deux notes alternées pour terminer - qui sont le cœur de l'idée originale, maintenant clarifiée en effaçant tout le reste.Le deuxième morceau - Still Life - conserve son sentiment de quiétude grâce à une ligne de piano simple qui laisse beaucoup d'espace à la partie contrastée (mais encore une fois simple) du violon. En tant que pièce absolue et non programmatique, le titre fait référence uniquement à la couleur et au rythme atmosphériques ; c'est à l'auditeur de voir la « nature morte » de son choix dans son esprit.Une note sur les performances :Malgré ma référence à des lignes « simples » et l'évitement déterminé par l'œuvre des grincements modernistes traditionnels, l'œuvre présente certains défis d'exécution en termes de phrasé et d'ensemble qui nécessitent des compétences et une musicalité considérables. In keeping with that idea, this work consists of two distinct pieces, the first - Transfigured Life - aims to draw in the listener with its quick, dancing rhythm and simple, melodic violin part. It 'transfigures' via a few short solo piano interludes into just two alternating notes to end - which are the core of the original idea, now made clear by clearing everything else out of the way.The second piece - Still Life - retains its sense of stillness through an uncomplicated piano line that gives lots of space for the violin's contrasting (but again simple) part. As an absolute, not programmatic, piece the title refers to the atmospheric colour and pacing only; it's up to the listener to see 'Still life' of their choosing in their own mind.A note on performance: Despite my reference to 'simple' lines, and the work's determined avoidance of mainstream modernist squeak - the work has certain performance challenges of phrasing and ensemble that requires considerable skill and musicianship. La valse n°10 tangue tranquillement sur les rives du Danube jusqu'à l'arrivée de la valse n°11 où s'exaltent sur les berges des musiciens tziganes.Une vague de douceur et de fantaisie enveloppera les pianistes de valses viennoises à travers ces valses de Brahms qui finalement les laissera libres à la danse.

Celle-ci chante dans l'intermédiaire du piano, à la voix d'alto. Elle est enveloppée de notes longues et tenues sur un ton nostalgique où l'on distingue un accompagnement en croches constantes sur une durée de temps régulière.A l'opposé du caractère de cette valse n°5, se présente sur un ton enjoué la valse n°9 en ré mineur. D'une grande expressivité, cette pièce à danser a un rythme binaire sur un tempo à 4/4. Beaucoup de soupirs s'entremêlent dans cette valse. Rossini y voyait des réminiscences d'une valse de Schumann du recueil Davidsbündler.Les pianistes amateurs de valses viennoises et de Strauss seront étonnés de découvrir que Brahms s'est évertué à vouloir « faire valser » son public. Ecoutez ces deux petites valses harmonieuses et mélancoliques pour finalement laisser libre court à la danse.

Il exprime sa pensée en préface dans un des manuscrits autographes des Inventions : « Méthode sincère destinée aux amateurs, aux apprentis pour leur apprendre à jouer correctement à deux parties, à procéder ultérieurement juste et bien avec deux ou trois parties obligées, à avoir de bonnes inventions, acquérir une manière chantante de jouer, ainsi qu'un avant goût de la composition ».Ainsi les morceaux sont groupés suivant l'ordre des demi-tons de la gamme et non pas selon la complication croissante des tonalités. Chaque invention a un seul motif thématique. Ce motif peut être agrandi en thème et par la suite, mené en contrepoint avec d'autres petits motifs et la recherche d'un équilibre rigoureux dans chaque invention est une grande difficulté qui peut dépasser la compréhension d'un pianiste novice. Bach intègre dans ces morceaux toute une panoplie de procédés techniques comme le canon, le contrepoint, la complexité de la composition nécessitant l'utilisation de la pédale harmonique et la façon d'ornementer un motif thématique.On peut entrevoir dans ces Inventions une manière de synthétiser sa méthode de travail et une initiation à l'écriture musicale. Sur un rythme binaire à 3/4, Bach montre un côté joyeux et léger dans ce morceau. Un canon à l'octave est le point central de cette Invention n°8. Ce passage est entrecoupé de moments musicaux qui se présentent sous forme de courbes mélodiques à la tierce entre les deux mains ou de marches harmoniques descendantes.Pas une note, ni phrase mélodique, ni procédé d'écriture qui ne soient indispensables dans cette miniature. Rien de superflu n'encombre les dessins mélodiques. Tout est épuré pour ainsi révéler des instants de climats agréables et fugitifs d'une grande sensibilité pour l'interprète.

La transcription pour piano des menuets a sans doute été faite par Beethoven lui-même et cette version pour piano à deux mains est publiée à Vienne en mars 1796 par Arteria. Elle portait comme titre : « VI Menuetten / Für das clavier / von Herrn / Ludwig van Beethoven / 2ten Theil ».Dans ce menuet, Beethoven adopte une forme classique en trois parties, celle du « menuet avec trio ». Le rythme pointé utilisé dans ce menuet est une figure temporelle de prédilection du compositeur. Il représente le rythme caractéristique de cette danse : à l'origine, le menuet est une danse française campagnarde qui a été par la suite adopté à la cour du roi Louis IV. Réjouissance et allégresse résonnent dans le sautillement de cette pièce miniature. Sur un ton par moments énergiques par d’autres langoureux, son balancement évoque à demi mot la personnalité stylistique du personnage et permet au pianiste de se divertir sur un morceau de Beethoven qui se destine à l'expression corporelle.

Sa version d’origine publiée en 1865 est à quatre mains, mais Brahms crée une version simplifiée à deux mains qui parait en 1867.Le compositeur signe avec ces seize valses exquises son unique témoignage à la tradition viennoise. La valse n°3 opus 39, aussi délicieuse que la célèbre valse n°15 opus 39, nous enivre dans une mélodie tourbillonnante qui s’abandonne au va et vient du rythme ternaire. Ce balancement est une invitation à la danse. Cette valse est construite dans une forme simple : ABA. Cela signifie que le premier thème est repris dans la partie finale et que le thème central est différent. Les trois temps de cette valse sont bien définis au seconda de ses phrases nostalgiques.Pianistes amateurs de valses viennoises et de Strauss seront séduits par la vague harmonieuse et mélancolique de cette pièce pour finalement laisser libre court à la danse.

Deux accords de tonique arpégés, sur lesquels se déploie le discours, à la main droite, dans le style du récitatif (adagio, mes. 34).Enfin, reprise du tempo initial pour les quatre mesures conclusives (allegro, mes. 35), le Prélude s’achevant sur la tierce picarde (en ut majeur).
