Stars was born out of a life-long fascination with the night sky, and the text is a meditation on the interconnectedness of creation. The light from distant stars takes eons to reach our eyes, connecting us with an ancient past. Many elements that comprise our bodies were cast out of stars million years ago. Since we are the stuff of stars, where will we cast our own light? Whose world will we impact? Harmonically, the piece seeks to evoke the vastness and mystery of space, simultaneously capturing the intimacy of connection. Stars Legacies of light Ages ago, you spun light into the bleak Ancient light falls on my eye And I? A star sacred stellar dust casting light out through time In whose sky will my light fall?  .Stars was born out of a life-long fascination with the night sky, and the text is a meditation on the interconnectedness of creation. 'The piece has been written for Edna Michell's Compassion project. In the composition I follow the idea of a dialogue, suggested by the text I have chosen. The intimate nature and fragile sound world of the duo mirror the fragility of our uncertain existence.' - Kaija Saariaho Light and darkness, night and day. We marvel at the mystery of the stars. Moon and sky, sand and sea. We marvel at the mystery of the sun. Twilight, high noon, dusk and dawn. Though we are mortal, we are Creation's crown. Flesh and bone, steel and stone. We dwell in fragile, temporary shelters. Grant steadfast love, compassion, grace. Sustain us, Lord; our origin is dust. Splendor, mercy, majesty, love endure. We are but little lower than the angels. Resplendent skies, sunset, sunrise. The grandeur of Creation lifts our lives. Evening darkness, morning dawn.

In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont,Wyoming. Ucross is an artist colony that gives writers, composers, and visual artists thegift of time, space, and support to follow their artistic pursuits; we are provided withstudio space, housing, and meals so that we can work continuously on our projects. I havebeen in residence at numerous artist colonies; however, nothing in my previousexperiences prepared me for living in such isolated, wild country. Ucross is situated on a20,000-acre cattle ranch at nearly 4,000 feet in elevation with fewer than 150 peopleliving within the town. But what Clearmont lacks in population, it makes up forabundantly and spectacularly in wilderness and wildlife. I composed the sextet Postcardsfrom Wyoming to offer three glimpses of what I found to be the most striking aspects ofmy residence. The Solitude of Stars, the third and final movement of the original sextet, was inspired by the stunning nightly display of the heavens above. Without city lightsdimming the night sky, countless stars shone brightly over the vast expanse of the prairie. This edition is part of The Solitude of Stars Project that I undertook during the 2020COVID-19 pandemic, which consists of a series of arrangements that I made forcolleagues and friends. In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming. In this project, not only does Heather Sorenson incorporate her signature singer-songwriter style of writing, she also explores different genres including folk, jazz, original classical and modern Christian music. This music book is the companion product to the newly released album, and it includes a fully realized piano accompaniment and vocal score. From upbeat to reflective, Midnight Faith contains selections suitable for recitals, concerts and church services. Songs include: Travel Light; Let Me Walk You Home; Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep; Nightlights; Midnight Faith; Things We Remember; Raise Your Hands; I Have Loved the Stars Too Fondly; Be Still My Soul; Day Is Dying in the West.

The partita is in five movements, each based on a text verse which is quoted before the movement. The first movement, smooth and flowing, depicts starlight, everlasting light, and a call to Christ. The second movement pastorale takes its cue from the text ...not as a monarch, but the child of Mary... and quotes GREENSLEEVES. The third movement is a firm declamation, At your great name...all knees must bend. The fourth movement is strong and dramatic with chromatic flourishes painting the text, ...holy might...defend us...from all assaults. The final movement is a fiery toccata over a pedal melody.

This tender setting has just the right feel for Christmas Eve evening services. The text sings of the Newborn Light breaking into the world at the stable in Bethlehem. Composer Ephrem Feeley was drawn to this text celebrating the starry night after the birth of his daughter Stella (which is Latin for “star”).
