Stand by Me: Concert Band: Score & Parts

American Composer's Forum – BandQuest Series – Grade 3Rhythm Stand pays tribute to the constant presence of rhythm in our lives: from the pulse of a heartbeat to the rhythmic sounds of the world aroundus. Celebrating the regular order in our lives composer Jennifer Higdon incorporates traditional and non-traditional sounds within a 4/4 swing style setting to heighten student awareness and enhance their creativity. Organized inunique compositional and rhythmic patterns this work invites students to explore multiple ways of organizing sounds and making music.

Grade 1 - Score and Parts-A descriptive delight! Let's all go to the amusement park! Clowns bumper cars and fun fun fun! Young musicians love to interpret music that conveys a visual image. Each delightful section lets your band do exactly that. And ifnecessary the movements can be performed as stand-alone pieces. Joe Hisaishi is a highly sought-after film score composer in his home country of Japan. Among his numerous movie scores are several for anime fi lms. Anyone who watched the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics heard his work, whether they knew it or not, as he composed the music for the opening ceremony. Stand Alone is an emotional song written for a Japanese TV-series, recorded by none other than Sarah Brightman. (She even sung in Japanese!) Joe Hisaishi?s music can now be enjoyed by an even wider audience thanks to this arrangement by fellow countryman Jun Nagao.

Four Sketches for Band consists of four short movements with varied character which depict the atmosphere of an old fashion fairground. The melodies are delightfully entertaining yet have a simple rhythmic structure. The instrumentation of this composition is perfect for bands without a full contingent of players. Each movement of this composition can be used as stand-alone concert item.

(for Multi-Level Combined Bands)-River Rendezvous conceived as a work for multi-level band festivals however it also serves as a dynamic stand-alone composition for grade 3 bands. Representing moods and scenes of the Fox River in southern Wisconsin the two contrasting movements may be performed separately or together. The primary themes in each movement are simple enough for beginning players and are then embellished and developed in the more advanced levels. Les Marteaux de La Marine was composed in 1999 as a commission by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The composition contains three static elements which interchange. Static in this case means that development of the material isnot pursued (by the composer). The first element with which the piece begins is tranquil and colourful. The second element is sharp and incisive while the third expresses energy. In all elements a repeated tone is the starting point whichexplains the hammers in the works title.The instrumentation is richly variegated with a harp also determining the palette of colours in the slower movements. The composition opens with an atmospheric Larghetto containing fine harmonies in thesoft and subtly moving wood-winds. The introduction breathes an impressionistic atmosphere in which expressive cantilenas and soloistic agile motifs stand out. A strong setting is followed by an Allegro virtuoso containing fast motifs contrasted withshort and rhythmic stars of the various instrumental sections. Trumpets and horns add a virtuoso bugle-call motif. After a short stringendosection the transparent Larghetto returns with a varied setting of the opening elements. The beautifulleading roles in this section are reserved for cornet (trumpet) and horn. Subsequently the flashing Vivo starts with continuous movements in triplets from both wood-winds and brass. Next the opening Allegro re-appears once again and thus LesMarteaux de la Marine ends with a fast and virtuoso climax. Les Marteaux de La Marine was selected as a compulsory grade 6 contest piece for symphonic bands in the Netherlands.

Each of the five movements of this innovative work is designed to invoke a particular type of emotion associated with leadership. Courage is stately in nature and played in a marcato style. Vision has a playful sense and focuses on mixed meters aswell as mixed emotions. The lyric and sensitive Compassion is meant to stir the soul while the contrasting Selflessness offers some of the most intense and demanding music of the set. The energetic final movement Heroes will bring to mind your ownfavorite superhero! Educator and speaker Scott Lang helped develop the concept for this unique work and has made available supplemental curricula centered around leadership and character development. This material is tied to the Common CoreStandards relating to reading writing music art and critical thinking. Each movement and accompanying curriculum can stand on its own allowing the director the flexibility of using as much or as little as desired. Bring the house down with Jerry Bensman's sparkling Footprints. Everyone is or at least feels important in this simple but very effective march which works equally well on stage as on parade. Often a march does not have to be difficult to possess a thorougly pleasing 'full' sound. In understanding this Jerry Bensman added a valuable repertoire-piece to the music available for youth-bands. In performing Footprints your beginning bandsmen take a major step forward in advancing their budding musical careers. Tip: Put the spotlights on your cymbals-player and make him (or her) the star of the evening.
