This work is part of a cycle of five short pieces for a single instrument and piano, focused on the five ages in the cosmogony of Ancient Mexican civilisation. The peoples of the Mexican highlands believe that time follows specific cycles and that the world was created following the pattern of 'trial and error'. The creation of the world is divided into several periods which are termed 'suns' (we are currently living in the fifth phase named 'Ollin'). Each period will be brought to an end through a natural catastrophe.Solei-Feu refers to the first attempt to create a world out of a rain of fire (nahui quiahuitl). The element of fire is reflected in the musical soundscape of this work, constructed from rampant, rhythmic motifs, fragmented splinters, spinning upswings and impacts reverberating through space. An intimate dialogue develops between violin and piano on the basis of extremely simple figures. Interconnecting lines and dense musical material are thrown against each other in a play of contrasting registers and blended tonal colouring, creating a mysterious and disturbing mythological universe coloured by its ontological pessimism. Blessing of Light is an excerpt from a Scottish-Irish benediction of anonymous authorship, which may have originated from old Celtic traditions. The rich, poetic language encourages hospitality for both friends and strangers and a charge to cultivate the inner spirit as a beacon of light for others. This SAB-setting offers additional options for soprano or alto divisi and comfortable ranges for men. Drawing primarily from the soundscape of a gently sweeping Mixolydian mode, this piece is designed to remind the listener of the distant past and its connection to our present. Modes have been utilized in many cultures at least since the earliest days of recorded history. Ancient Greek musical modes were revived and explored during the Middle Ages, and are sometimes considered the fathers of the scales we use today in what is often labeled tonal music, or music rooted in Western European musical practices. Blessing of Light is an accessible introduction to modal harmony for mixed choirs. Modes are characterized by combinations of half or whole steps that form a unique scale. The Mixolydian scale in this piece, for example, is identical to the major scale with the exception of a lowered (or flatted) 7th scale degree. For ease of use in sight-reading, key signatures are indicated by the melodic tonal center with the chromatically altered lowered 7th. When introducing this piece, it may be beneficial for the conductor to begin with warm-ups or vocalizes utilizing the scales below.Blessing of Light is an excerpt from a Scottish-Irish benediction of anonymous authorship, which may have originated from old Celtic traditions. This SSAA work, originally written for SATB voices celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Masterworks Community Chorale in Newnan, Georgia. The inspirational text is Somewhere I Have Never Traveled, a text by the Yale Theologian, Thomas Troeger. Somewhere I Have Never Traveled has potential for building tone and creating a panorama of colors, while at the same time creating emotional soundscapes, all through a delightful text that creates a dreamlike innocence. It has been a joy to re-voice this original SATB composition for SSAA voices and to collaborate with Heather Orr at Montgomery High School. In July 2014, my dear friend Kathy Bizarth commissioned me to compose a new work celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Masterworks Community Chorale in Newnan, Georgia. It was in September when we agreed on the inspirational text, Somewhere I Have Never Traveled, a text by the Yale Theologian, Thomas Troeger. I moved to Italy in January for a sabbatical, and in February, I spent four days composing the piece at the Palazzo Bassi Brugnatelli, a dear friend's villa in Robbiate, Italy. Interestingly enough, the middle part of the piece (mm. 30-39) and end of the piece came first (mm. 40-62). Completed in Conegliano in late February, this composition is very special to me as it was the first composition I wrote after my mother died, and it was also composed for a dear friend. I have a profound connection to what I hope will be a deeply inspirational composition to those who sing it. Somewhere I Have Never Traveled has real potential for building tone and creating a panorama of colors, while at the same time creating emotional soundscapes, all through a delightful text that creates a dreamlike innocence. An expressive piece for cello and organ. The composer writes: Sharp Stones is based on two musical palindromes: one melodic in the cello part, the other harmonic in the organ accompaniment. The palindromes are of unequal lengths, so with each repetition they interact differently. Moreover, each part mutates as it repeats, thus producing a continuously changing soundscape. Instrumentation: Cello & Organ Composed: 2015 Published by: Zimbel Press.

Take a journey on the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that linked the Far East with the Western world in this imaginative piece by Robert Sheldon. Exotic harmonies combine with driving rhythms and colorful percussion to create a soundscape of shifting sands and faraway lands. A solo alto saxophone references the sound of a Turkish sorna to open the piece, leading to the persistent rhythm and modal melodies. Finger cymbals, shakers, and hand drums help to represent the culture of this remote part of the world. (2:19) Correlated to Sound Innovations, Book 2, Level 3.

Winter programming at its finest! A rare find for four-part mixed or treble choirs. This original poetic text recounts the sheer beauty of snowflakes floating to earth in a winter paradise. A gently lilting tempo, the ebb and flow of a graceful melody, and some closely spaced cluster chords create an artistic soundscape that will challenge and engage even the most accomplished choristers. Outstanding performances are the result of outstanding rehearsals, and this piece contains the depth for both. Nature, not to be outdone, leaves one and all . . . spellbound.

Garrop's brass quintet describes the daily journey of the sun god, Helios, as he crosses the sky, then sleeps through the night in a golden boat which carries him back to the beginning. As such, her soundscape ...begins with a fast and fiery sunrise and ends in a serene, sunset mood. Helios was commissioned by the Gaudete Brass Quintet, who also recorded the work on Chicago Moves (Cedille label). Of all the music on the disc, this one is so well played, it stood out as one of my favorites. (quotes from John J. Puccio, Classical Candor) For advanced performers. Duration: 4'30.
