Eight Varied Pieces For Orchestra-Three new collections of varied pieces for orchestra for players from beginner to grade 3 standard.This collection of three books each containing eight varied pieces has been compiled to capture the imagination of young players and to introduce them to a wide range of musical styles.Special effects appropriate to each instrument provide additional learning points and great entertainment both in rehearsal and performance. There are glissandos for strings and trombone flutter tonguing for flute and trumpets (for those able to) and a range of vocal sounds for all!The scoring allows these pieces to be played by variouscombinations of instruments. Ideally your orchestra should have some instruments from each section but if not (for example no brass) then the supplementary piano part (available separately) can be used to fill the gaps. for violoncello and orchestra-Krzysztof Penderecki‘s fondness for the cello becomes apparent. The solo part is juxtaposed by four other cellos. The resulting sound blocks interplay with each other which is in turn repeatedly interrupted by the orchestra.

(1993)Since its premiere by the Baltimore Symphony in 1994 at Carnegie Hall the GRAMMY®-winning Metropolis Symphony has entered the orchestral repertoire and been performed by orchestras all over the world.Metropolis Symphony is a five-movement musical response to the world of Superman and Krypton refers to the exploding planet from which the infant Superman escaped. A dark microtonal sound world is createdby glissandi in the strings trombone and siren. Two percussionists play antiphonal fire bells throughout the movement as it evolves from a recurring solo motive in the cellos into ominous calls from the brass section. Graduallythe movement builds toward an apocalyptic conclusion. Duration - ca. 7:00

If Bach Was A Cellist-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live the fantasy that everything Bach wrote he wrote for the cello.The concerto in D minor (BWV 1043) for two violins string orchestra and continuo by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is one of his most loved works. Indeed the slow movement may be one of the most popular and loved pieces in the instrumental literature. Traditionally it is believed to have been written in Köthen where he held the position of 'fürstlischer Kapellmeister' from 1717-1723 a town that saw the birth of the Brandenburg concertos and the solo works for violin and cello. The Dorian church mode (the absent Bflat in the key of Dminor) would also speak for the younger Bach. Recent research however has shown that the orchestral parts carefully written out by Bach himself and found among the papers of his son Carl Philip Emanuel date from around 1730. The sophistication of the composition also speaks for a later date than Köthen. The original score has been lost.Always in need of concert material for his 'Collegium Musicus' in Leipzig Bach made a version of the present concerto for two harpsichords (BWV 1062). The original key was transposed to C minor so that the top note would not exceed a D but remain within the range of a standard harpsichord. Another C minor concerto (BWV 1060) for two harpsi-chords often heard in an arrangement from the 1920's for violin and oboe by Max Schneider and Max Seiffert speaks for two concertos in D minor for two violins by Bach.When arranging an orchestral score for the pianoforte one has to remember that a double-bass sounds an octave lower than notated. This is a welcomed fact when dealing with two instruments that play the original solo parts an octave down. At the same time for a transcription of this kind the ambition must be to avoid the cello soloists playing in octaves with the violin tutti parts - which is what would happen were they to share the same material. Third Part Of The Orchestral Triptych Triduum-Symphony: ‘Vigil’ (1997) is the last of three interrelated works forming Triduum commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra the other works being The World’s Ransoming for cor anglais and orchestra and the Cello Concerto (both 1996). All three relate to the historical events and religious liturgies of the Easter Triduum namely Maundy Thursday Good Friday and the Easter Vigil. The symphony’s first movement ‘Light’ deals with the promise of a glimmer of light in the darkness. The central movement ‘Tuba insonet salutaris’ (Sound the trumpet of salvation) is based on the Exsultet melody sung at the Easter Vigil described by Mozart as probably the mostbeautiful ever written. The final movement ‘Water’ opens savagely but subsides towards the presentation of two conflicting principal materials a wild ecstatic dance followed by a slower more mysterious texture leading to a climax and a luminous floating close.
