What would love be without music - or music without love! Many couples associate unforgettable beautiful hours, a first meeting, or first kiss with a particular song. And composers have always been inspired and stimulated by love, have celebrated romantic love and longing from afar, secret love, and jealousy. In her selection of 80 songs from seven centuries, Mirjam James evokes this tremendous feeling with the most beautiful songs ranging from medieval courtly songs, through Beethoven's Ich liebe dich, to the Beatles song And I love her. Many of the songs come from German and English language traditions, but what would such a book be without the fire of southern Europe or a dose of French charm, without the moving melodies of cool northern climes, or the melancholy songs of the Russian soul? A vocal score has been published which contains all of the the songs in the new Carus book of lovesongs in easily playable accompaniments. For many of these songs choral settings by famous composers such as John Dowland, Thomas Morley, Thomas Tallis or Thoinot Arbeau have been adopted, wherever possible, in their original form. In addition, well-known and familiar original settings by Beethoven, Brahms, Benjamin Britten, and other composers will be found in this collection. Songs with entirely new accompaniments have also been included, resulting in a collection of lovesongs offering a distinctive stylistic variety suitable for many different occasions. Score available separately - see item CA.240800.

This three-movement work is adapted from my Woodwind Quintet No. 3 (2008), which was originally a four-movement piano duet (2007) and a symphonic wind ensemble work (2007), arranged here for a saxophone ensemble, for premiere at the 18th World Saxophone Congress held in July 2018 in Zagreb, Croatia. The authentic folk music from China West has amazed and inspired me in the creation of this work, which has the folk music elements drawn from the folk songs Du Mu and Amaliehuo of the Zang People; Ashima of the Yi People; as well as Dou Duo and the Lusheng ensemble music of the Miao People. It's written for soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass saxophones with possible multiple players for all parts. This is the first complete edition of the rounds, canons and songs from Ravenscroft's four principal publications: Pammelia, Deuteromelia, Melismata and A Briefe Discourse. Thomas Ravenscroft (c.1582-c.1635) was a collector, editor and theorist as well as a composer, whose work was esteemed in his own lifetime and is valued today for its insights into the popular music of the period. Rounds and canons in this collection are all presented in resolved form, and the variety of subjects includes drinking songs, hunting songs and four songs in West Country dialect, as well as Latin-texted material. It is hoped that performers may be inspired to breathe new life into a repertoire that sheds fascinating light on a hitherto neglected area of Elizabethan music-making.

Two Shakespeare Songs were written in 1989-1990. Cry, Cock-a-Doodle-Doo was written first, and is scored for Soprano Voice and Piano. It takes its text from a song by Ariel in The Tempest. The Witches' Song is for solo Soprano, with the text coming from Macbeth. Both are dramatic works which allow the performer to showcase her virtuosity; either would be a perfect audition piece or both could be combined as complementary items on a recital programme.
Alison Bauld (b. 1944) is an Australian-born composer and writer who lives and works in London. Her compositions are distinguished by their dramaticstructure, partly inspired by musical theatre. She has also written a three-volume tutor for keyboard and composition.

Three Imaginary Folksongs was requested by the Concerts Society of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral for their concert season celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Cathedral. The composer was asked specifically for a work which would highlight the much-admired talents of the principal clarinet, Jacqueline Thomas. The title is unambiguous. Taking three different approaches, each of which has a modal starting point, the three ‘folksongs’ from imaginary places, were developed in styles which reflect the work of earlier folksong-inspired composers. The first performance took place at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral at a concert that not only celebrated the Cathedral’s 50th birthday, but also Stephen’s 70th.
