Leopold Mozart was only able to understand his son's musical genius in terms of it being a God-given wonder: That my boy [...] knows all of this with his 8 years that could be expected of a man of forty years. In short: whoever has not seen or heard it, cannot believe it. According to the title page the six sonatas can either be played as piano trios, violin sonatas or simply piano solo. As we have already published them in the form of piano trios and violin sonatas (HN 1078), we are now presenting them in an Urtext edition for piano solo. Sonatas Wq 75-78 Arioso Wq 79 Fantasie Wq 80-Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's works for Violin and Harpsichord obbligato pervade his entire compositional oeuvre. The earliest works like the Sonata in D minor still numbered BWV 1036 date back to the years of study with his father yet show already a remarkable creative will of his own. The latest work the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for Harpsichord (Piano) obbligato and Violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71–74 and BWV 1036 but alsothe arrangements of the trios Wq 143–145 for Violin and Harpsichord most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs as well as a – previously ignored – early version of Wq 71 which like BWV 1036 grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert together with Joseph Hellmesberger but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works C. P. E. Bach bridged the gap between the late Baroque sonatas of his father and the early classical 'Klaviersonate mit begleitender Violine' [Piano Sonata with Accompanying Violin].

Vol 1 Ut 50226 + Vol 2 Ut 50227-For more than 200 years Mozart’s piano sonatas have been part of every pianist’s repertoire. Research done over the last few decades has made it possible however to establish more accurate dating and ordering of these works. Expert examination of original documents has shown that many printed editions from the eighteenth Century give more reliable detail than Mozart’s own written scores; many of these works were prepared for publication by the composer himself and marked with precise indications for performance with regard to ornamentation dynamics and articulation. All this together with the rediscovery of documents that only becameaccessible again at the end of the 20th Century gives reason enough to justify the publication of a new Wiener Urtext edition of Mozart’s Piano Sonatas.To follow the second volume published in the spring of 2003 with Sonatas K 330 to K 576 we now present the first volume which contains the Sonatas K 279 to K 311. For Sonata K 284 variation XI in the final movement is given both in the version that appears in the original manuscript and in the version used in the first edition; in order to make the music easier to read both versions are given in normal print size. Music that is clear and well laid out with page turns in convenient places makes this edition extremely user-friendly.Advice on performance by the renowned Mozart specialist Robert D. Levin provides fresh stimulus for what can otherwise too often become a rather tired interpretation.

Scheibe’s three sonatas for flute (or violin) and obbligato harpsichord were published by Haffner in the late 1750’s but were probably composed much earlier; they contain a significant quantity of elaborate imitative writing that is out of character with Scheibe’s later music. Although rooted in the same tradition as the sonatas for flute and obbligato harpsichord by J.S. Bach C.P.E Bach and composers at Berlin court of Frederick the Great these are more substantial works each having four movements in the traditional slow-fast-slow-fast scheme. For the most part they are trio sonatas the right hand of the harpsichord acting as the secondtreble voice but several movements feature idiomatic writing for the keyboard. Also interesting is the large amount of ornamentation called for particularly in the harpsichord part. While Scheibe disapproved of the excessive embellishments that Bach actually wrote into his melody lines these sonatas are nonetheless heavily ornamented albeit through the insertion of notational symbols; in addition to turns and mordents Scheibe uses no less than three different trill symbols!
