The harpsichordist, conductor and organist Gustav Leonhardt was considered a pioneer of historical performance practice. Between 1968 and 1978 he made harpsichord transcriptions of several of Bach?s compositions for unaccompanied violin or violoncello. Now these transcriptions are being made available to us by his pupil, the famed harpsichordist Siebe Henstra, based on the handwritten notes that Leonhardt used for his own performances.

Complete Piano Sonatas I-The Piano Sonatas are regarded as the central works of Alexander Scriabin’s compositional output. No other composer after Beethoven reshaped this genre so radically thereby reinvigorating the tradition of the sonata. Scriabin’s desire not simply to continue the existing tradition but to surpass it is evident as early as his first sonatas. These are exciting works from the pianist’s perspective and in their abundance of expression and wealth of imagination. Up to the third sonata Scriabin developed a distinctive feeling for structural coherence and cyclical unity which at the same time revealed poetic qualities.Thisvolume contains the earlier works; sonatas officially published during the composer’s lifetime as No. 1 op. 6 No. 2 (Sonate-Fantaisie) op. 19 and No. 3 op. 23 as well as the sonatas written during his youth in G-sharp minor (1886) and E-flat minor (1887-89). Sonata no.1 in c minor op. 32-At the beginning of the 1870s Camille?Saint-Saëns showed a particular fondness for the Violoncello. He completed his first Cello Sonata in December 1872 immediately after finishing his first Cello Concerto.The sonata is strongly reminiscent of Beethoven not only due to the key of c minor but also predominantly on account of its gripping dramatic art. The exceptional position of this demanding in parts highly virtuosicsonata was quickly recognised by the public and critics and so the work soon found its way into concert repertoire.?Henle's Urtext edition takes all surviving sources into account for the first time ever. PascalRogé and David Geringas kindly provided the markings for the Piano and Cello parts.
