For the first time this edition presents work for Guitar solo and for Guitar duet by Graciano Tarragó grouped into different collections. Despite the fact that the composer published the set of works separately (with the exception of the collections of studies and the Catalan Christmas songs) it is not difficult to see that a natural classification surges from its formal structure from its source of inspiration and from its intent upon observing the works as a whole.The main objective of this revision was to update its presentation to meet the demands of the Guitar world today and to offer scores that ease the introduction to the study of this copious collectionof works. This collection of the work of the Maltese composer Gordon Mizzi for solo guitar is being made available to the public for the first time. Saints and Fireworks The Music of Gordon Mizzi Volume Two is the second of two albumsof Gordon Mizzi's music which are available from Mel Bay Publications. This album takes its title from the newly released CD Gordon Mizzi Saints and Fireworks that has been recorded by Carlos Bonell one of today's mostcelebrated guitarists and which is available from Spearhead Music. This album contains a diverse collection of original works as well as transcriptions of Renaissance and Maltese folk music by Gordon Mizzi. The Branles de Malte byJean d'Estrée were originally composed by the French Knights of St. John in Malta in 1551 for the Dauphin of France. Gordon Mizzi has made guitar transcriptions of these five dances and this is the first time that they arebeing published. The Branles de Malte by Adrian Le Roy are also included. There are a number of original compositions. Saints and Fireworks a piece in two movements vividly represents Malta's village festas. Island Scenes aresix musical portraits of towns and villages dotting the landscape of Malta. They include Valletta- Barrakka Gardens San Giljan-After the Feast Mdina- Città Notabile the dreamy Comino-The Blue Lagoon Sliema- The Tower and the pulsatingly brash Paceville -Sin City. Three Love Poems : Hula Lahaina and Hana are influences from Hawaii. There are also two cradle songs Child Don't Cry and Ninna Nanna as well as folk inspired melodies such as NightCrossing and il- Maltija. The guitarist will find a veritable pot pourri of scents and sounds in this album.

Timeless Solos is a play on words. The solos in this volume contain no time signatures or bar lines. I did this because I wanted the solos to be very expressive in interpretation yet 'free-form' in structure. The companionrecording presents my interpretation of these works. You may interpret them differently and that is fine! All solos are in notation and tablature. When writing these solos I first envisioned the form as an extended 'cadenza'.However from my earlier trumpet playing days I recalled that especially in the 19th century a cadenza was a momentary break in a solo which gave the performer a chance to dazzle the audience with his or her virtuosity. Thesesolos are not about that. Rather they are a vehicle to give the guitarist an opportunity to move the listener with the performer's expressive ability. I also thought of these solos in the form of a 'chant'. However most chantsare monophonic in form and these solos in various parts present a fairly lush harmonic structure. While the solos were written for a 7 string guitar they may be played successfully on a 6 string guitar. Alternate notes for thosefound on the 7th string are shown in the tablature part. Also the solo Peace is written in Dropped D tuning and makes little use of the 7th string pedal tones. The solos are contemplative in nature and provide ample opportunityfor individual expression and interpretation. I hope you enjoy playing and performing these works.

Henri Sauguet (1901-1989) was a French composer and organist. He was a contemporary and friend of the great Francois Poulenc and other members of Les Six but developed his own distinct independent style. His works included Ballets and Stage works large scale orchestral works and chamber music. The two volumes of Musiques Pour Claudel were written in 1973. Each collection is scored for solo Guitar and consists of short intermediate pieces which would be ideally suited to a student’s concert or recital. They were first written as instrumental interludes for a stage work by the French diplomat poet and playwright Paul Claudel (1868-1955) with whom Sauguet oftencollaborated.

Three Late Sonatas for Classical Guitar. Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687 ? 1750) is known to guitarists as the greatest baroque composer for the lute, yet most are only familiar with the earlier portion of Weiss?s prolific output found in the British Library in London. Inspired by a forty-year friendship with the late Douglas Alton Smith - a major figure in the scholarly study of the history of the lute - guitarist, composer, and head of the guitar program at Temple University in Philadelphia, Allen Krantz explored the Weiss manuscripts found in other European cities, particularly the Dresden editions which contain the fifteen sonatas that Weiss produced from the late 1730s to the end of his life. Transcriptions of three of those fifteen late sonatas are featured in this book in modern standard notation along with the original lute tablature as found in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Dresden. While the baroque lute?s tuning makes some works awkward or impossible on the guitar, the three works presented here?Sonatas No. 35 in D minor, No. 42 in A minor and No. 45 in A Major? are in their original keys which happen to be guitar-friendly. The author?s generous and scholarly ?Preface? provides thorough historical and performance notes for the music in this volume.
