?Small Suite for Flute and Piano is a piece written for the Paris Conservatoire contest by Pierre Petit. Really melodious, it lasts eight minutes and is divided into three distinct movements. The first part, ?Gai et allant? is quite fast and has to be played joyfully. It uses the whole range of the instrument with some really high notes and includes a Cadenza. The second part, ?Lent et très chanté?, is slower, slightly lower in range and really melodious. It is quite short compared to the other parts. The third and final movement has the same kind of range as the first one. Fast, it features a part to be played at Marzuka tempo and one to be played at the same tempo than the beginning. The piece ends on a really high trill. Small Suite is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. It however requires some strong skills in terms of technique and sonority that would be acquired by advanced players: the difficulty is therefore rated at 7.??.

This version and the one for alto saxophone and piano are the ones the most commonly used. The flute score is one-page long and contains technical difficulties that would make it ideal for an upper intermediate player. Its author, Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed many symphonic suites, operas and seven orchestras, including Angelique (1926) and Entertainment (1930). He also was in charge of the Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.

This 'Suite' is not one of my 'epic' instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom.Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family); the string section in the Sarabande; in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc.; and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously.This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses; it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights - acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flute en suite. This three-movement suite for one piano, four hands was inspired by one of the largest lakes in North America, bordering Vermont, New York, and Quebec. The first movement, Wind on the Water, is a flowing piece in 5/4 meter that uses broken chords, broken intervals, and an expansive melody to capture the play of waves on the lake. The second movement, Mystery of the Deep, uses two contrasting sections, one mysterious and one cheerfully swinging, to musically portray a folkloric monster who lurks in the depths of Lake Champlain but also delights locals with occasional sightings. The final movement, Tides of Revolution, draws upon the lake's history as a pivotal battleground during the American Revolutionary War. Driving rhythms, biting dissonances, changing meters, and dramatic exchanges between the players bring the suite to an exciting close. Optional parts for percussion and violin/flute are available for download for two of the movements.

This composition is based on the song 'Lai, Lai, Lai' written by a group of intellectuals who were executed in Teheran in 1973 during the reign of the Shah. A song of the Resistance, it depicts a mother singing a lullaby to her child and telling it that its father has been arrested and imprisoned.Barbara Heller composed this piece in 1989 and dedicated it to all Iranian women. Originally for violin and piano, it has been arranged for small ensemble (Flute, Viola, Guitar, Percussion ad lib.) by Sigi Schwab and the Diabelli-Trio; the female speaker reads out an introduction and then recites the three verses of the song in between the five movements of the suite.
