Six Sonatas for Two Recorders

Playing Score.Like no other musician of his time did Johann Mattheson (1681-1764) succeed in assimilating the musical knowledge of the 18th century in his writings.However Mattheson's theoretical writings were grounded on a solid practical experience of which these Sonatas for 3 Treble Recorders offer a superb practical example.Of medium difficulty they contain a rich and colourful array of movements ideal for study and play.

This edition of recorder duet sonatas is intended as a corrected urtext but for its transposition to the range suitable for treble recorders. They will make ideal recital pieces for any concert.

Sonata in D major TWV 41:D9 - Sonata in G major TWV 41:G9-These three editions (BA 5880 BA 5889 BA 5890) each comprising two solo sonatas with basso continuo are all taken from Telemann’s famous Essercizii musici; a collection of 24 sonatas including 12 solo sonatas and 12 trio sonatas. These were moulded after Corelli’s Sonata da Chiesa and have four movements: slow-fast-slow-fast. The sonatas long thought to stem from the late 1730s are now believed to have first been published by the composer in approx. 1729. The main sources are the three part-books from the original edition of 1729.This first ever Urtext edition edited by the Bach and Telemann scholar Klaus Hofmann is taken from the Telemann Musical Works. Six Recorder Sonatas. At the beginning of the 18th century, the recorder enjoyed great popularity as a solo instrument for amateurs. Among these were also the princesses of the English court, for whose musical entertainment and training Handel?s six recorder sonatas were probably written in 1725/26. Only four of them appeared shortly thereafter in print and thus also reached a broader audience; the other two were first discovered for the recorder in the 20th century. Thanks to their melodic and rhythmic incisiveness, the pieces, whose recorder parts are relatively easily mastered, number among the most beautiful written for this instrument. Owing to wide-ranging bass lines and copious figures, the continuo instrument requires a rather well-versed player. In the score of the Urtext edition, Ullrich Scheideler provides a moderate continuo realisation; the additionally available performance score (HN 1574) with figured basso part offers the advanced musician latitude for his/her own improvisation.
