In these three works, his commitment to diatonic music and his assimilation of both Brahms and indigenous British music are apparent, as well as his mastery and understanding of his instrument.

Sandra Dackow Little Known Gem - Grade V. Prelude, In Minuet Style, Sarabande, Caprice, Pastoral, Air, Frolic. Containing seven fun to play sections, each movement in An English Suite has approachable technical demands while not being too lengthy. The Prelude is neo-Baroque, where Baroque rhythms are combined with Victorian harmonies. Sounding more difficult than it actually is to play, this movement is busy with violin passages that reach high G’s. In Minuet Style has lovely lines for viola and charmingly couples an older form with more advanced harmonic language. The Saraband offers drama and resembles the style and writing of Elgar. There are high G’s for both cello and bass, but the passages are logical and fall under the hand easily. Most technically difficult, the Caprice is a diversion requiring precision, speed, and technique to maneuver through changing harmonies and tonalities. The retro Pastoral was written in a manner similar to the Gavotte from Grieg’s Holberg Suite, while the Air contains effective alternation of solo notes with tutti textures. The final Frolic movement is a fun fiddle tune that is great for featuring the first and second violin sections. It has also served as a theme song for one of New York’s classical music stations. Keep arco accompaniments at the frog and off the string during repetitive rhythmic passages and in pizzicato sections, as they can easily be rushed.

The latter first appeared in Parry’s oratorio Judith and was adapted as a hymn tune after the composer’s death. This fantastic cornet solo will give your section leader a real chance to shine. From a composite text derived from Psalms 148 and 150 and a 19th Century hymn tune by Charles Hubert Hasting Parry, Hal Hopson has fashioned a grand, festive anthem of praise to the creator. The vocal parts are very manageable (much of the piece is unison - only the 2nd stanza and the final cadence are in parts), and the additional instrumental resources, while not required, will enhance the effect of grandeur that Mr. Hopson intends. Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) set William Blake’s Preface to Milton to music for a rally of the ‘Fight for the Right’ movement in the Queen’s Hall, London, in 1916. It became more generally known as ‘Jerusalem’ when Parry conducted it in 1918 at a concert to mark the final stage in the Votes for Women Campaign, after which it was adopted by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (and is still sung at meetings of WI Groups all over Britain). Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. A key figure in the so-called English Musical Renaissance, Parry was a considerable composer of chamber music. His three violin sonatas, the first of which, in d minor, is here published for the first time, along with the Fantasie-sonata and Sonata in D major, date from the 1870s and 80s, and are contemporary with his four symphonies and setting of Milton's Blest Pair of Sirens. They are fine additions to the string repertoire and will be greeted enthusiastically by violinists seeking new material for recitals. Performing editions of each sonata are available separately.
