GIA Editor Emeritus Randall Sensmeier has made an incalculable contribution to congregational song over thirty years, working with the finest writers and composers in the field to produce high-quality collections. Works he edited appear in the hymnals of many denominations. While this work has largely remained behind-the-scenes, Sensmeier is also a first-rate composer whose tunes deserve attention and use. Beauty's Blaze brings together twenty of his finest tunes composed since the publication of his last collection in 2001. .

Martin E. Marty, Emeritus Professor at the University of Chicago, says it best in the forward of this new hymn tune collection, “Teach Our Hearts is full of music that will indeed belong in cathedrals and inspire their choirs. But I am here called upon to witness to the fact that everything in this book is singable among smaller worshipping communities, where volunteer choirs help lead ordinary congregations-if there are such-in singing.” 54 new hymns, songs and carols are presented here texts by a plethora of well-known writers. Completed in 1914, this suite (whose title translates as Nights of Late Summer) is one of the Swedish masters last and greatest piano works, with a wistful and bittersweet quality that is quite unlike anything else. Originally to include seven sections, Stenhammar cut out two for the final version, which is the one offered here - in a handsome digitally-restored reissue of the edition first published in 1916 by Wilhelm Hansen of Copenhagen. In contrast to many of the on-demand scores now available, this one comes with all the pages and the images have been thoroughly checked to make sure it is readable. The score is beautifully printed on large size (9 x 12) off-white stock with a quality cover, all saddle-stitched in the traditional sheet music binding. As with all PLP scores a percentage of each sale is donated to the amazing online archive of free music scores and recordings, IMSLP - Petrucci Music Library.

These words perfectly characterize this new recording of lush texts set by Carl Schalk. Shine like Stars is a brilliant collection of choral compositions ranging from majestic, robust hymns accompanied by full organ, brass, and timpani to songs of hushed reverence. Superbly performed by the Kapelle of Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois, Shine like Stars represents the magnitude of Schalk’s skill as a composer. “These compositions are, above all, marvelous expressions of faith - truly music of the heart and soul” (Randall Sensmeier).
