Pfarreimusik Wünnewil-Flamatt requested a new work to be commissioned for the celebration of its 111th anniversary. They asked the composer to create a piece lasting approximately 11 minutes and 11 seconds. The band asked Jan Van der Roost to reflect on a number of aspects from the past, as well as the current state of affairs. The piece contains lyrical movements, cheerful and jubilant parts, as well as light introverted sequences. Fantasia Helvetica is a varied concert piece with a number of challenging passages, but is also fun to play! Captivated by the playing of famed Franz Liszt pupil Eugen d'Albert during the 1883-1884 concert season, Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) began work on Concert Fantasia. After an arduous composition process, on which the composer himself remarked, I stopped playing around and came up with something... but it still sounded too poor and unoriginal... Tchaikovsky laid aside Concert Fantasia and began sketching out his Third Orchestral Suite. He eventually returned to and finished Concert Fantasia in June of 1884, with the surprising addition of the second movement Contrastes. Originally composed as the first movement of his Third Orchestral Suite but ultimately rejected, Tchaikovsky reservedly added it as a second movement to Concert Fantasia. While recognizing and wishing to use the movement for its own merits, he still harbored doubts and added an alternative solo cadenza to the end of the first movement in case Contrastes was to be omitted. The Russian Musical Society under the direction of Max Erdmannsdörfer premiered the work in 1855. In the two decades after its debut, Concert Fantasia received many performances but disappeared from the repertoire until it underwent a revival in the latter part of the 20th century. Instrumentation: 3.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): [Solo Piano].

About Build-A-Band Series
The Build-A-Band Series provides educational and enjoyable music for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation. Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part. (Please note: In some of these arrangements the 4th Part, and the Bass Part are the same, making it possible to play those arrangements with only 4 parts.)

Franz Liszt was barely 20 years old when he first read Dante s Divine Comedy, but it left a lasting impression on him throughout his entire life that only a truly impactful creation can have on the human soul. This is what inspired the Dante Sonata which Liszt premiered in Vienna in 1837. Stemming from this, he created a revised version entitled Apres une lecture du Dante, Fantasia quasi Sonata which appeared in 1856 within the second cycle of his Années de pelerinage (Years of Pilgrimage). In the appendix of the present edition, the work s earlier version entitled Paralipomenes a la Divina Commedia, Fantaisie symphonique is also included. It has survived in the handwritingof Liszt s secretary, Gaetanio Belloni, and it contains autograph notes by Liszts. This revised (2016) edition contains not only musical scores of excellent quality, but also a detailed foreword in English and German as well as critical notes in English.

The composition of the work began as a few improvisational thoughts on a short phrase from a Beethoven piano sonata, which eventually developed into a six-minute fantasia that ultimately bears little audible relation to the original Beethoven phrase. The work is in four sections, of which the first and last are nocturnal, prelude, and postlude respectively. The main second section grows from a simple imitative idea to a chordal climax that subsides into a chorale and soliloquy which is elegiac in nature.

The opening movement is a free fantasia, contrasting with the middle movement, a scherzetto, in homage to, and based on the letters of the name of, the composer Douglas Steele, an assistant to Sir Thomas Beecham and a founding father of Chethams School, and which quotes from Steele’s beautiful carol The Snow Falls.Divertimento was first performed by John Turner and Janet Simpson at a concert in aid of the Peter Cunningham Memorial Fund at Mellor Church on 17th January 2005. It uses both treble and descant instruments. The second movement was originally composed for a concert in Manchester Cathedral in memory of Douglas Steele, one of the founding fathers of Chetham's School, and quotes (by kind permission of Forsyth Brothers Ltd.), from his well-known carol The Snow Falls. It has been separately recorded by John Turner and Stephen Hough on Autumn Sequence – the music of Douglas Steele and his Circle (Campion Cameo 2040/41).Martin Bussey was born in London in 1958. He was a Choral Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge, during which time he studied composition with Robin Holloway. Following postgraduate singing study at the RNCM he settled in Manchester and held a number of posts, including Head of Academic Music and Director of Choirs at Chetham’s School of Music until 2013. He continues as Musical Director of the Chester Bach Singers, a Vocal Tutor at Manchester University, Chairman of the Finzi Friends and a Director of the Ludlow Song Weekend. Compositions include the highly successful monodrama about Mary I, Mary’s Hand, premiered in 2018; a significant collection of solo songs which includes settings of Housman, Hardy, and Walt Whitman, many recorded on the disc Through a glass; and much choral music, recorded by Sonoro under Neil Ferris in 2019.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

A spell-binding exploration of the music of Spain, FantasÃa Española features four exciting yet contrasting sections and challenging parts for all players. Three of Spain's most famous composers are represented in this medley arranged by Bob Phillips. The piece begins with an exciting, driving excerpt from Asturias (Leyenda), by Isaac Albéniz, which, though written for piano, is most often heard on guitar. The setting of this section allows the violins and violas a display of virtuosity with its unrelenting rhythmic drive. Beautiful, lyric, and emotional, Tango in D, also by Albéniz, will showcase the musicianship of the entire orchestra. Originally written for piano, the strings will shine in this second section of the arrangement. The third section is the slow and lyric, Adelita. Drawn from the deep treasure of Spanish guitar music and written by the father of classical guitar, Francisco Tárrega, this piece is simply beautiful. The medley concludes with Danza Ritual del Fuego from the ballet El Amor Brujo. Written by Manuel de Falla for full orchestra, the string setting drives to a fabulous and dramatic finish.(5:45).
