Mais plus de 50 ans après la mort de son principal représentant, Scott Joplin, le film 'The Sting' a rendu ce style une fois populaire bien connus et à la mode à nouveau. Cette petite sélection des chiffons Joplin n'est évidemment pas complete sans ' The Entertainer '. En comparaison, ' Faciles vainqueurs ' et ' Rag-temps danse ' ne sont aucun moins amusant à jouer, surtout que dans ce dernier cas, l'interprète a non seulement à jouer, mais aussi stomp son pied. Comme beaucoup de gens, je me suis intéressé au ragtime en tant que forme artistique grâce à Joshua Rifkin et ses interprétations de la musique de Scott Joplin. En 1971, après divers projets communs au Royaume-Uni, un ami américain m'envoya un exemplaire des Collected Piano Works ('vres complètes pour piano) de Joplin, tout juste publiées. Quelque temps après, au cours d'un voyage en Australie, un ami pourvu d'une immense collection de disques me fit écouter des enregistrements de rags et de musique de style « stride ». C'est ainsi que je découvris l'incomparable James P. Johnson interprétant, entre autres, Mule-Walk Stomp et The Carolina Shout. Mon initiation fit un bond en avant quand je fis la connaissance de William Albright. Son disque Ragtime Back to Back, enregistré avec William Bolcom, avait déclenché en moi une admiration passionnée. Non seulement Bill Albright me donna la partition de sa Grand Sonata in Rag (Jobert-Paris, 1974) que j'avais eu le plaisir d'entendre auparavant, mais il me fournit aussi des copies de ses transcriptions d'anciens enregistrements de « strides » figurant sur le disque mentionné ci-dessus. À Terre-Neuve, un passionné de ragtime me fit écouter des enregistrements de Max Morath et de sa musique. Je pris contact avec le compositeur qui eut la gentillesse de m'envoyer la partition de Polyragmic. Récemment, j'ai travaillé les magnifiques rags de William Bolcom (Complete Rags for Piano, Edward B. Marks MusicCompany), superbement enregistrés par John Murphy (Albany). Ainsi, après avoir joué Joplin, Albright et Morath au fil des années et maintenant, certains rags de Bolcom, le temps me semblait venu de m'y essayer à mon tour. Voici le résultat de cette aventure. Ces pièces, écrites en janvier et février 2012 pour mes amis du Gers, sont présentées ici dans l'ordre de leur composition. Sainte -Christie et Caillavet sont deux petits villages perchés sur des collines, avec vue sur les Pyrénées. Pavie, près d'Auch, est le site du Château Monlaur. Mon épouse et moi résidons à Caillavet. Les deux derniers rags ont été composéspour nos voisins. Pour finir, un conseil de Scott Joplin : « C'est toujours une erreur de jouer le ragtime vite. »
