Schubert -- Impromptus, Op. 90

In autumn 1827 Schubert composed eight 'Impromptus' for publication as a complete collection by Haslinger in Vienna. When the plan fell through Schubert offered his 'Impromptus' to Schott as pieces which 'could be issued individually or all four together'. The name of the works probably originated from the publisher Haslinger and Schubert also used it for his collection published later as op. posth. 142. The lyrical-romantic works are suitable for advanced piano students and have the character of sonata movements. Robert Schumann who regarded them as parts of a four-movement sonata drew attention to the second collection published by Diabelli in 1839 in hisreview.For the first time this scholarly-critical Urtext edition presents the musical text of the 'New Schubert Edition' in new engraving and with optimum page-turns. Franz Schubert's Impromptus and Moments musicaux are among the milestones of piano music and are a reuglar feature in music lessons and concert performances. This new edition brings all Impromptus and Moments musicaux together in one volume in a practice-focused manner. The musical text of the 'Impromptus' is based primarily on the composer's autographs as well as on a copy of the Witteczek-Spaun Collection which was very important to Schubert. As no autograph sources for the 'Moments musicaux' exist, the first and early editions of individual pieces were used as reference material. Due to this painstaking research these editions are very precise, not only with regard to musical details but also with fundamental issues like the position of repetition signs. Complementing the Impromptus and Moments musicaux, the Wiener Urtext Edition also presents a new edition of the three late piano pieces D 946. Careful study of Schubert's autographs has led to various retouchings in the musical text, in D 946/2 for instance to the supplementation of a bar. The edition offers a new approach to the issue of the second episode of D 946/1, deleted by Schubert in the autograph, but included in the posthumous first edition and meanwhile embraced in modern concert practice. The separate edition of these repertoire pieces that have enjoyed increasing popularity since the 1970s has been expanded to include the two piano piano pieces D 916B/C that have survived as fragments and have been completed by Robert D. Levin in close observance of Schubert's compositional principles. Like the three piano pieces D 946, both works originate from the context of the Impromptus and have survived in the composer's autograph sketches. Their inclusion in this volume completes the picture of Schubert's late keyboard output and provides new impulses for the pianistic concert repertoire. / Piano

Des douze compositeurs de notre série « Au piano », Franz Schubert était sans doute le moins à l'aise au piano ? mais néanmoins quels chefs-d'?uvre il nous a laissés pour cet instrument ! Il n'est guère de pianiste qui ne soit immédiatement captivé par l'atmosphère joyeuse mais mélancolique des impromptus et des Moments musicaux de Schubert. Même les pièces simples de Schubert au début de ce volume réservent des rebondissements surprenants qui leur confèrent une profondeur qui leur est propre. Ses danses ne sont pas non plus de simples « divertissements ». Peu importe à quel point ils peuvent sembler charmants à première vue, il y a toujours un ton mélancolique dans ses valses et ses ländler. Cela semble refléter le pressentiment du compositeur gravement malade de sa propre mort.
