Franz Schubert: Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano for cello and piano op. posth. D 821 UT50402 New Urtext edition of Franz Schubert s Arpeggione Sonata in the version for cello and piano. Instrument: for cello and piano Edition type: urtext edition Composer: Schubert Franz Franz Schubert s Sonata in A minor D. 821 was originally written for piano and arpeggione, an instrument of the 1820s combining features of the guitar and the cello. This instrument was in use for just a short period of time, so that the composition has now become standard repertoire for cello and piano, and this is the version presented here.A handwritten violin part in the hand of Anton Diabelli kept by the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, however, shows that the sonata s arpeggione part was initially arranged for violin, long before the first print in 1871 introduced the well-known version for cello and piano. Wiener Urtext also publishes Diabelli s arrangement for violin and piano in a separate edition. Both editions are essentially based on Schubert s autograph, the cello part in principle relies on the first printed edition of 1871, the violin part is based on Diabelli s arrangement.

It is argued that the arpeggione (think: bowed guitar) would have been left as a trivia question for historians had Schubert not written this particular Sonata. By the time this 1824 composition was first published in 1871, the arpeggione had already fallen out of favor and out of use. Even the first publication indicated the violoncello as the viable alternative solo. The editors have gone back to the autograph, which resides at the National Library of France, together with the contemporary arrangement for violin by Diabelli, in creating this critical edition. The history of the sonata and this edition, together with performance notes and critical commentary, are included.

The enigma that is Schubert's arpeggione sonata - written for a newly invented instrument that would fairly disappear from public consciousness by the time the Sonata first saw publication. Written in 1824 for an instrument that came into being a year earlier, the Sonata would see its first edition in 1871. By then, the publisher assumed that the piece would thereafter be performed on cello, but editors Jost and Darmstadt have based their present edition upon the violin arrangement by Anton Diabelli, which pre-dated the first publication. Background notes describe the history of the work, and performance and critical notes address proper authentic performance.
