Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed his (Latin) Sanctus in E flat from 1768-1778, when he was the director of music for the churches of Hamburg. This short and solemn work for choir and orchestra was intended for the liturgy of Communion at Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. The present edition is based on a copy of the manuscript which is preserved in the music archives of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin. Altnickol's two settings of the Sanctus, based on a Gregorian cantus firmus, are among his few works which have survived. While in the second of these compositions he chose to write a polyphonic choral setting, in the present Sanctus he allows all four voices of the choir to sing unisono, accompanied by a polyphonically treated string ensemble. This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The “Sanctus” begins quietly, with divided sopranos trading off on a major second in a mysterious and meditative way. Parts add and build until the basses enter with a cantus firmus of sorts. The major second continues to figure prominently in the ensuing material. The movement ends with a simple melody repeated in unison (“Hosanna in excelsis”) fading away into the distance. Duration 3:55.
