In the 19th century nationalist themes came into fashion. Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, potpourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his easily playablecompositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day. This edition is essentially based on the first printed versions of these pieces - with just a small number of printing errors and inconsistencies corrected without comment.

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a pianist and composer of international stature and one of the towering figures of early 20th century music. He left behind an ouvre consisting of some 170 works, many of which await discovery or are known only in forms far removed from the composer's intentions. Sergei Rachmaninoff : Critical Edition of the Complete Works (RCW), a project issued by Russian Music Publishing, is the first complete edition of Rachmaninoff 's music prepared in accordance with scholarly criteria while meeting the demands of performers. It catalogues, explores, and annotates every available musical, literary, and iconographic source on Rachmaninoff 's music. The RCW is published under the scholarly auspices of Dr. Valentin Antipov. The editorial standards of the RCW satisfy the most discerning criteria and are safeguarded by an Editorial Board of internationally acknowledged authorities in Rachmaninoff scholarship. Alexandre Rachmaninoff (1933-2012), the composer's grandson, has been retained as a special advisor. The RCW is furthermore realized in close cooperation with the Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture, which houses one of the most extensive collections of Rachmaninoff autographs worldwide. All sources are consulted for the first time and all compositions are presented in their authentic form with all existing versions from the composer.

At the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, classical composers also wrote light music and publishers were happy to back this market niche to increase sales fi gures. As such, salon music fl ourished both in society and at home. The dance repertoire in Mel Bonis' compositions consists mainly of these Salon Pieces. This volume once again illustrates that even those pieces considered as light are characterized by the elements of elegance and depth of expression.First Publications: bolero, op. This volume from the popular Cellissimo series contains 30 entertaining recital pieces, mostly from the Romantic period. In additionto three original serenades by Jacques Offenbach, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and the French composer Mel Bonis, the volume contains beautiful character pieces, mostly one-movement forms such as berceuse, elegy, humoresque, meditation, melody, nocturne, romance, tarantella, valse de concert and much more . Expressive lyrical pieces are represented as well as cheerful and virtuoso works. In addition to original works, there are numerous arrangements of popular works, including Schumann's Traumerei, Grieg's Anitras Tanz, Fauré's Après un rêve, Elgar's Salut d'amour or Rachmaninoff's Vocalise - all pieces that are well suited as concert and encore pieces . The volume also contains rarities and new discoveries, including original works by cello virtuosos such as Dotzauer, Offenbach, Goltermann, van Goens and Trowell, as well as works by composers Mel Bonis, Juliette Dantin, Ethel Harraden and Claudine Smidt. The level of difficulty is demanding and is aimed at advanced cellists. Many pieces use the 5th-7th position, others have passages in a simple thumb position, sometimes also with high harmonics. They are therefore very good practice examples for advanced users who want to apply sophisticated techniques to beautiful examples of literature. Last but not least, the requirements for expression and design offer plenty of room for cellist and musical development.

Apart from the collection of 'Classical Manuscripts' composed by Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) and passed off by him as transcriptions of movements by old masters, the violonist published original works very early. Kreisler himself liked to play them as encore pieces, sweetening many a concert with such pieces of 'musical confectionary'. The most famous miniatures are undoubtedly 'Love's Joy' and 'Love's Sorrow', two 'old Viennese dance-tunes' in which Kreisler evoked the coffee-house atmosphere of his home town with wonderful melodies and beguiling harmonies. The miniatures are endearing, lively and catchy, yet with an elegiac air - but full of charm and elegance. These magnificent salon pieces are now available in an arrangement for wind quintet by Joachim Linckelmann.

Other Finnish works for violin contains twelve pieces for violin and piano. Though brief in duration, most of them were written for concert use, being rich and expressive and, in some cases, technically quite demanding. Others are delightful salon pieces. This volume was compiled by violinist Mirka Malmi and edited by her with pianist Tiina Karakorpi. Many of the women of Finnish origin who wrote music in the 19th and early 20th century were cosmopolitan by nature. They studied and found employment in the cultural metropolises of central Europe. Because of their gender, they generally had no opportunities for employment in national cultural institutions in Finland. Their music was mainly published outside Finland, and in most cases they enjoyed a broad network of connections, an expansive cultural sphere and a successful career.

Just like many other violin virtuosos of the 19th century, Pablo de Sarasate also composed a series of pieces for violin and piano (or orchestra) for his own concert use. Highly virtuosic salon pieces with echoes of national folk music traditions from all over Europe are at the centre. Sarasate published his eight Spanish dances in four books between 1878 and 1882. They alternate between fiery passion and a yearning expressiveness, and are undoubtedly among his most successful compositions. In masterly fashion, Sarasate here mixes up Spanish folk tunes with arrangements of popular compositions of the time. As in the case of the Henle Urtext edition of Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen (HN 573), a violin wizard of our own time is responsible for the fingerings and bowings: Ingolf Turban.

Barcarolles for a Sinking City was inspired by the city of Venice, a place that has long held the fascination of artists, writers and composers, and which I have been lucky enough to visit on several occasions. Sadly it seems that future generations may not be so lucky: in addition to the city's slow sinking and recently discovered tilting, studies predict that if global warming and the resultant rise of ocean levels is unabated, the entire city (as well as many other coastal cities around the globe) will be under water by 2100. I. Funeral Gondola The late, cryptic piano works of Franz Liszt made a profound impression on me as a young composer, among them two works he entitled La Lugubre Gondola (usually translated as The Funeral Gondola ) which were said to be a premonition of Wagner's death in Venice, his coffin transported through the canals in a black gondola. These late pieces of Liszt acquired even greater significance to me after I spent two summers in Bayreuth under the patronage of Friedelind Wagner, the granddaughter of Wagner and great-granddaughter of Liszt. This movement is a meditation on Wagner, Liszt, Venice and its own evanescence. II. Barcarolle/Quodlibet The Quodlibet (Latin for what pleases) is a musical form dating back to the 15th century where many disparate melodies are juxtaposed. Popular in the Renaissance, sacred and secular melodies were combined, often to comical effect due to the resultant incongruity of the words. The form was considered the ultimate test of a composer's mastery of counterpoint. The most famous Quodlibet is without doubt the final Variation of Bach's Goldberg Variations. As a form the Quodlibet is less common in more recent music, although examples can be found in the works of Kurt Weill and David Del Tredici. My own Barcarolle/Quodlibet was inspired by the (perhaps apocryphal) story of the funeral where musicians were asked to play a Bach Choral, but due to miscommunication played instead the Bacarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann. Here, the Bach Choral Allen Menschen mussen sterben (All Men Must Die) is heard in the strings pizzicato, with a tempo indication In slow motion. The alto line of the Bach suggests a phrase from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (Alle Menchen werden Bruder) heard in the muted trombone. Before long, the famous tune from Offenbach's opera is heard, followed by quotations from iconic Barcarolles by Chopin, Mendelssohn and Faure, as well as two Venetian popular songs and more Beethoven. III. Barcarola/Ostinato/Carillon An ostinato is a repeated musical figure, and carillon is Italian for music box. This movement references the obsolete genre of salon pieces that imitated music boxes: such works by composers like Liadov and Gretchaninov used to be a mainstay of pianists' encore repertoire. This movement is however much darker in conception than those pleasant trifles. Utilizing the full battery of percussion, the carefully notated temporal slowing of the ostinato becomes overwhelmed by a poignant chorale melody before this box is snapped shut. IV. Barcarolle Oubliee (Forgotten Barcarolle) Marked limpido (still) the final movement begins with the sound of rain produced by a percussion instrument called (appropriately) a rain stick. Halting phrases in the harp coalesce into the accompaniment for a plangent melody heard in the clarinet. The central Adagio of this movement leads to a shattering climax, before the opening phrases return and dissipate into nothingness.

Christian Sinding (1856-1941) gained worldwide fame with his piano piece 'Fruhlingsrauschen', which is likely to be his most famous work still today. The '5 Klavierstucke' Op. 97, created in 1909, are bravura pieces the late Romantic harmony of which is sometimes reminiscent of Richard Strauss. The effective brilliant piano setting is characterised by a widely elaborated melody and can be easily mastered by the advanced player.Large arpeggios characterise the first piece 'Des Morgens'. 'Auf dem Wasser' is an evocative tone painting in swaying 12/8 time with powerful unison passages in the middle section. 'Intermezzo' appears capricious, with dance-like figures. 'Gewitter' is a brilliant concert study in the style of Liszt. The work concludes with the piece 'Aquarell', a poetic salon piece revelling in harmonies, notated as a clear piano setting.

Carreño’s pieces are delightful, fresh, and superior so-called salon pieces. They present many technically interesting challenges, but are also supremely rewarding thanks to the quality of their composition, which includes gorgeous melodies, intelligent command of the use of harmonies and the sunny happiness of rhythms from her native Venezuela.Part 1 of 2Edited by Clara RodriguezGrades 7–8+ and beyond.
