Russian Overture

Cyril Scott was an English composer, writer, and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer, whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works,which include two mature symphonies, three operas, three Piano concertos,concertos for Violin, Cello, Oboe and Harpsichord, several overtures, four oratorios, as well as a mass of chamber music

Rimsky-Korsakov composed his three greatest orchestral works over a short period: he completed Capriccio Espagnol in 1887, and he composed Russian Easter Overture in 1888, simultaneously with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. Russian Easter Overture is a magnificent overture in a single movement that was dedicated to the composers Borodin and Moussorgsky. Several hymns of the Russian Orthodox Church create a characteristic atmosphere. Arranger Tohru Takahashi has made the sound even more colourful by using several mallet percussion instruments.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov completed this programmatic overture in the spring of 1888 and dedicated it to the memory of two of his friends who were also prolific Russian composers: Modest Mussorgsky and Alexander Borodin. He utilized original melodies and traditional melodies from liturgical chants of the Russian Orthodox Church. His brilliance as an orchestrator was showcased in this large work for full orchestra and included multiple time and key signatures in addition to various solos and cadenzas.This arrangement stays true to the original key signatures and includes all main melodic and harmonic voices and structure in a continuous performance that is accessible and challenging. Care should be shown to the changes in meter, tempo and key signatures along with techniques such as divisi and tremolo. Subdivision and counting can be reinforced throughout this piece. In addition, suggested fingerings have been given to help navigate chromatic and shifting portions of this arrangement. Enjoy performing this arrangement of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece.

Among the most frequently performed and well-known of P. I. Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) works, The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49 (more commonly known as the 1812 Overture) was written in 1880 to commemorate the 1812 defeat of Napoleon's invading French army by the Russians. Despite the composer's lack of enthusiasm about the project at its inception, claiming that he wrote it without any warm and loving feelings, Tchaikovsky acknowledged later that he did well in its composition, saying I absolutely do not know whether my overture (The Year 1812) is good or bad, but I rather think it is the former (pardon my immodesty). It premiered on August 20, 1882, in Moscow at the Art & Industry Exhibition, Ippolit Altani conducting. Famous for its use of cannons in the Finale, the Finale also calls for the inclusion of a military brass band, which is labelled as open instrumentation in the original. This edition by Martin Schmeling spells out specific instrumentation options for the banda.
