Denmark Revisited - Danish choral works for mixed voices a cappella. The University Choir Lille MUKO and soprano Else Torp conducted by Jesper Grove Jørgensen. For many years now there has been a broad international interest in performing Danish choral works not least from the 20th century but often the Danish lyrics have been a hindrance in realising this goal outside Denmark. With this in mind we have thought it important to make Danish choral music more available through the release of selected works in which the Danish text is translated into English. With the present choice we have endeavoured to present works which fullydemonstrate the wide range and originality of Danish choral music: the particular lyrical Danish tone of Svend S. Schultz and Jørgen Jersild; the original simplicity of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen; the characteristically Danish late romanticism of P.E. Lange-Müller and Rued Langgaard; and the music of composers with their own particular musical idiom such as Vagn Holmboe Bernhard Lewkovitch and Bo Holten. We have also tried to choose works with lyrics by writers that are specifically Danish in origin including Hans Christian Andersen Johannes V. Jensen and Tove Ditlevsen. We hope that this release will help to spread knowledge and understanding of Danish choral music outside Denmark.(Jesper Grove Jørgensen)ContentP. E. Edizione critica per Emy Bernecoli e Elia Andrea Corazza. Par RESPIGHI OTTORINO. The Sarabanda for violin and piano (P015a) is a short composition consisting of three pages dated 1897, published here for the first time. The original manuscript is part of the private archive of Potito Pedarra, cataloguer of Ottorino Respighi’s compositional legacy. Ottorino Respighi composed this work during his youth in the same year as the Sonata in D minor (1897, P015), Giga (P015b) and Allegretto vivace (P015c), all scored for violin and piano. In 1898, Respighi transposed the Sarabanda to F major in order to incorporate it into the Suite per pianoforte (P022, unedited). Traces of the Sarabanda’s theme are recognizable in the Grave (Tempo di Sarabanda) of the second part of the unedited ballet Le Astuzie di Colombina (Scherzo veneziano), composed in 1920 (P130, unedited). The autograph manuscript of the Sarabanda for violin and piano has a number of posthumous markings which have not been included in this edition.

With the symphonic poem Fontane di Roma Respighi began the so-called 'Roman Trilogy' taking up a wide-spread subject in the fields of literature and music. Since the French harpsichordists waterworks have always been the subject of programmatic music and even the poetry of the 'seicento' already dealt with the Roman fountains. Respighi's setting however is not just an onomatopoeic representation of waterworks. As is explained by Respighi in his specially attached programme the music captures moods and pictures that are generated within the viewer while looking at the fountains.

Grand Orchestre

Composed in 1908, Respighi's Concerto all'antica reflects one of the most characteristic artistic aspects of this composer, namely his love for ancient music. This can also be seen in those of his works that adopt the toccata and concerto forms (Toccata for piano and orchestra, Concerto a cinque), as well as his use of the late Renaissance/Baroque style for the three suites in his Antiche danze ed arie per liuto or in his Uccelli.
