Jan Freidlin's lush and beautiful Romantic Concerto for Trombone, Piano and Strings was composed in 2004 and is in the traditional three movements. The 15-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.A 4 1/2 minute sample of the Concerto (on our site) is beautifully performed by the Odessa Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Conductor Igor Shavruk and Trombone solist Andrei Sokolov.Below is what the composer has written about his work: Written in 2004 , this composition combines three contrasting movements, however their style is not typical of a classical concerto, nor of a romantic work. The 1st movement - Moderato has a long recitative-like introduction performed by the soloist over a background of aleatoric sounds of divisi strings. The tonality is indefinite with many harmonic changes. The music gradually builds up more and more leading the listener to the 2nd movement - Vivace energico in which the Piano makes its first appearance, adding rhythmic complexity. In the 2nd movement the main motive from the 1st movement is reintroduced and the mood gains in intensity with various syncopated rhythmic phrases as the orchestra and solo Trombonist accelerate together into a major climax. With the energy drained out of the music by the conclusion of the 2nd movement the listener is brought to the 3rd movement - Adagietto. This movement is absolutely lyrical, elegiac and unexpectedly tonal. Its main melody has an atmosphere of nostalgia leading to the emotional center of the whole work, the softest climax of the Concerto . The soloist plays it in many tonalities, then gradually this warm wave eases, leaving the listener in a cathartic condition. The Concerto contains many virtuosic moments for the soloist that sound very expressive and heroic.Jan Freidlin

The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Trombone world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Concerto with Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile. Mr. Sauer brings a true Trombone feel to the 4 1/2 minute work for advanced performers.

I wrote this piece with a darker sonority and an emphasis on lyricism, qualities that I associate with the viola. In the first movement, titled Fantasia, the viola begins with a quiet and free cadenza, becoming more passionate until the woodwinds join in dialogue with the soloist. Gradually the rest of the orchestra enters, exploring ideas from the solo cadenza while introducing a new theme that reappears in the last movement. The second movement is a scherzo, mischievous in mood with the orchestra and viola trading barbed jokes. The antics are interrupted by a brass chorale with embellishment from the viola. The scherzo then resumes with prominent contributions from the bassoons. The last movement, titled Nocturne, plays with different kinds of music associated with the night. A sensual and romantic atmosphere gives way to something more menacing and ultimately violent. After a climax from the full orchestra, soft strings and solo viola lead us into the coda, taking an ambiguous idea from the first movement and transforming it into a lyrical and heartfelt prayer. The concerto ends with the solo viola ascending on the crest of an orchestral wave of sound.

Saxophone Concertino is one of a series of solo concerti by Japanese composer, Satoshi Yagisawa. In this piece, the solo saxophonist's voice does not separate from the concert band, but rather develops musically and gently in combination with it. This work enables the soloist to showcase his ability with variety and grace. An oboe concerto from the romantic era? Embarassingly, due to the small amount of solo literature for the instrument from this period, this question often asked of oboists, must be answerded with a reference to the few small concert pieces and sets of variations available. The A minor Concerto by Hugo Schuncke, who was a musician at the Court of Stuttgart, fills a need. The work consists of three movements: a virtuoso Allegro, a pastorale Andante and a rhythmic, exciting Bolero in rondo form. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4057600.

This concerto by the Russian master, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, is one of the most often performed works in the repertoire for trombonists. This edition is an edited version with some changes in the orchestration: a bass clarinet and a euphonium were added to replace some of the instruments in the original Russian military band such as the Bassetti in B-flat and the Corno basso. Concert for Trombone and Wind Ensemble is a great piece to feature a member of the ensemble or a guest soloist.

Composed for violinist Baird Dodge in 1995-97, SLEEP is a 25-minute concerto in three movements. Thefirst movement (Twitching) is dramatic in character, full of contrasts, pitting the violin against the orchestra in more or less romantic fashion. The second (Breathing) is comprised of overlapping layers of simple harmonies accompanying a freely evolving, lyrical melody in the violin. In the third movement (Sweating), the soloist and ensemble initially work together to create a rising line. They soon diverge, and an increasing layering of multiple lines throughout the ensemble leads to a very high point of density which is then abruptly cut off by the virtuosic frenzy in the violin which ends the work.
