No less than 37 years, more than half of Wagner's life, passed from the first idea of the opera 'Parsifal' to its world premiere in Bayreuth in 1882, it being Wagner's last stage work before his death on 13 February 1883. The music publisher Schott from Mainz paid 100,000 marks to acquire 'Parsifal', and the fact that 'Parsifal' has become part of the repertoire of all major music theatres of the world proved the publisher right. This opera is performed every year, especially on Good Friday, always with the same great success with the audience. Every music lover witnesses the grandeur of this highly significant work.Apart from the libretto, this edition contains introductory commentaries of Kurt Pahlen who also adds information on the compositional structure and context to the musical as well as external and internal dramatic action of the opera. A short synopsis and a brief outline of the genesis bring the work into relation with the composer's entire oeuvre and life, thus offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated introduction.

The Richard Wagner Complete Edition presents the composer's entire output for the first time in a reliable form. The conductor Michael Balling, in the early years of the 20th century, attempted to make Wagner's work more accessible for research and performance, but the edition only reached 10 volumes - some with grave shortcomings - and was discontinued after Balling's death in 1925. A further attempt at a complete edition by Otto Strobel was abandoned at the preliminary stages. This third attempt at a complete edition will be the first scholarly, critical edition, based on an evaluation of all the accessible source materials and the latest findings of serious Wagner research. As the edition is also intended for practical performance, the musical text has been kept free of philological insertions; these are listed in the appendices of each volume in the Critical Commentary. Numerous, partly unpublished works - some relatively unknown - and variant versions are published here for the first time. The edition presents authentic texts for Wagner specialists and researchers and critically based performing materials. Contrary to widely held opinions, even the well-known works of Wagner are not necessarily available in reliable editions. The genesis, history and performances directed by Wagner himself are extensively documented so as to present as complete an image as possible of Wagner's compositional intentions.

He initially planned a work that was modest in its production and performance demands. The project was also given priority not least because of the prospect of the royalties which he would then receive. He once again turned to Breitkopf & Hartel for the performance material: 'Tristan und Isolde' is scheduled to be given its first performance at the end of this year. I still hope that it will take place in Karlsruhe under my guidance. Due to the celebrity that I have now acquired, I assume that a new and easily performable work of mine should be able to spread very quickly across the German stages in its first winter season. Wagner was wrong. although the publisher had spent a great deal of time and money in producing preliminary material, Wagner wrote to Breitkopf & Hartel from Munich in November 1864: The squalor of Germany's opera singers and the vile condition of its opera houses have so far dissuaded me from allowing a performance of 'Tristan und Isolde'. What I needed was an impassioned young monarch to restore my courage. Next spring you will hear about the work's premiere in Munich, and you will then hopefully become more confident about this publication.Richard Wagner wrote Tristan and Isolde in the years 1857 to 1859. Gottfried Sonntag, a in military musician in Bayreuth, created a (concert) march from some of the central musical motifs of the 'Ring'. In those days this was a frequent way of making music from stage works more accessible to a wider public or of exploiting its popularity.
