The Requiem in C minor by Francesco Durante (1684–1755) is one of the most important works of this genre written in the first half of the 18th century. In his Messa de’ morti, Durante shows great creativity in combining traditional elements of church music with new ideas originating from instrumental writing and opera. The quality and originality of his Requiem make it an exciting rediscovery with the potential to establish itself as a core repertoire work of sacred choral music.
Mainly known today as the teacher of Pergolesi and Paisiello, Durante spent much of his life working as music director at various conservatories in Naples and enjoyed great renown as a church composer well into the 19th century. Despite its widespread popularity, indicated by the number of manuscript copies to be found across Europe, his Requiem never appeared in print. For this first publication, editor and leading British choral director Stephen Darlington has consulted many of the approximately 50 surviving sources of the work, presenting a critical edition which for the first time makes Durante’s Requiem available to a wider musical audience.
This edition of Durante’s Requiem has been recorded by Stephen Darlington, with Oxford’s Christ Church Cathedral Choir, soloists from The Sixteen and Oxford Baroque.

We sought to alter as little as possible the reconstruction of Freystadtler, Eybler and Sussmayr, and to present Mozart's largest sacred work as it was 'arranged' by his grieving and devoted pupils (1791-1792). (H. C. Robbins Landon)The Landon version of the Mozart Requiem, published by Mozart expert H. C. Robbins Landon, was a milestone. In his meticulously edited work, Landon incorporated latest research in an attempt to take the contributions of all the three Mozart pupils Franz Xaver Sussmayr, Joseph Eybler and Franz Jakob Freystadtler into account for the first time. The edition presents the unfinished masterpiece in a version that comes as close as possible to the state in which it was found in 1791/92, a concept that has proven itself repeatedly in performance. The Landon version is ideal for all who want to perform Mozart's Requiem today in this historical form and wish to use neither the traditional Sussmayr version nor modern-day reconstructions or new compositional attempts. NB: piano reduction and choral score can be used for both versions. In 1821 Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm closed Mozart's Requiem with the liturgically obligatory Libera me, Domine.

The German Requiem is one of the world's most famous requiems, even though it does not set the customary requiem text to music. Brahms did not want to follow the Latin Catholic funeral mass, addressing the Last Judgment's terror and sinful human beings' redemption through death on the cross. His attention, on the contrary, was on Biblical texts that focus on human transience and comfort: comfort to the bereaved and comfort to all who fear death. To some extent, it could be called the epitome of Brahms's work. In the relevant volume of the new Brahms Complete Edition, on which this new practical edition is based, editors Michael Musgrave and Michael Struck clear up all sorts of legends, errors, and erroneous readings. Brahms's subsequent minor compositional changes are taken into account, poor decisions in previous editions are corrected, and the Bible texts sung contain writing and meaning corrections. In addition, the texts elucidate many myths about the composition's origin. Thus, this Urtext edition creates a fresh perspective on the People's Requiem, as Brahms would have preferred to call the composition. This new B&H publication is extremely good value, and it really does breathe new life into an old master. The pages of the full score are delightfully easy on the eye. The edition's visual effect is precise, lucid, and sympathetic - as, indeed, a good performance of Brahms's choral masterpiece should be.(Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ)authoritative music text based on the current state of research; erroneous traditional readings corrected; orchestra material tried and tested; new piano vocal score (compact engraving, clear legibility).

In 1856, the year in which Mozart's one-hundredth birthday was elaborately celebrated, Franz Lachner composed the Requiem in F minor op. 146. It became his most well-known and most important work. Lachner's intensive study of Mozart's music on the occasion of the commemorative year lends credence to that fact that it was not inspired by a personal loss, such as a death in the family or among his friends. Although closer examination proves that his music differed essentially from Mozart's, Lachner's work shows a clear expression of his admiration for him. The parallels between the two Requiems range from the characteristics of the organization of the text and the formal structure, to the similar treatment of individual sections, themes and motives.

Biber's Requiem in F minor is amongst the most impressive settings of the Requiem Mass of the 17th century. The exact reason for the composition of the Requiem, which can be dated to 1692, is not known. The dark key color of F minor is emphasized by the instrumental scoring for two violins, three violas, basso continuo and three trombones (colla parte with the chorus). The vivid language of the Requiem text offered Biber a wealth of possibilities for expressive, musical interpretation. The intensity of the musical language used to portray lamenting and mourning is impressive. In the course of publication of the Biber Requiem, surprisingly the primary source, which until now had been thought to be missing, resurfaced and the edition could be prepared based on this astonishing discovery. This is a work of mid-level difficulty for a choir and with the clear disposition of the string parts it is well suited for performance by amateur choirs.

Volume 3 of the Complete Edition contains the Mass in A minor op. 197, which was the last work Rheinberger ever composed. The Mass was left unfinished, since he died while working on it. Only the Kyrie, Gloria and the Credo, through the et resurrexit were completed. However the remainder of the Credo has been preserved in the form of sketches. These are published in the present edition for the first time. In addition, the sketches were carefully completed and prepared for performance by the editor. This version is published in the appendix of this volume.

Anton Bruckner composed his Requiem in D minor at the young age of 24 in memory of a friend of his father's who was his patron. The work was greatly influenced by the Viennese classical style. He revised the work at the age of 70 in 1894 and held it in high regard throughout his career, even though his setting never enjoyed the popularity of similar works by Mozart or Verdi in the concert repertoire. The new edition now published represents the revised version, which can be regarded as a very personal, and at the same time impressive compositional testimony to Bruckner's artistic development on his journey towards becoming the great church musician and symphonist. Bruckner set the text of the Requiem Mass in a relatively compact form in terms of extent and scoring. The range of compositional colors stretches from Alpine-influenced writing for male voice choir (Hostias), to a five-part choral movement (Sanctus) and an unaccompanied movement (Requiem), to movements with choir and soloists.

After the premiere of 12 Dec 1870, the poet Paul Heyse wrote to Rheinberger: I do not want to wait until we see each other again, most honoured friend, to say to you how much your work grabbed hold of me, lifted me up, and washed me away on a current of strength and beauty, swelling higher and higher..

Johann Adolf Hasse, Kapellmeister at the Saxon-Polish court in Dresden, composed the Requiem in C for the ceremonial exequies of the deceased Elector Frederic August II in November 1763 in the Catholic Hofkirche in Dresden. With this work, he composed a monument in music to his long-standing, generous employer, who was also King of Poland under the name August III: passionate choral movements, echoes of historic compositional styles, expressive vocal solos and arias undeniably revealing Hasse the opera composer, plus trumpets and timpani in the orchestra - all these are the ingredients of a royal Requiem Mass in the style of a Missa solemnis. - First edition- Passionate choral movements of medium difficulty- Expressive vocal soli- Royal Requiem Mass in the style of a Missa solemnisAdditional program suggestion: Miserere in C minor by Hasse (Carus 40.961).
