Born in southern France, Auguste Perier (1883-1947) studied at the Ecole Nationale de Musique in Montpellier before entering the Paris Conservatoire. Whilst studying, he won the 1904 first prize for clarinet, proving his significant ability on the instrument. Therefore, his Complete Study of the Clarinet is very well-informed. The ninth volume of the series, 22 Modern Studies is suitable for clarinetists of grades seven and eight standard. Whilst addressing modern tonality and rhythmic elements, 22 Modern Studies also addresses features including articulation, dynamics, scales, arpeggios, accidentals, ornamentation, performance directions, tempo markings, phrasing, key and time signatures, and complex rhythms, among other aspects. Perier's Complete Study of the Clarinet (22 Modern Studies) is essential to advanced clarinetists seeking to improve their technique for performances of modern repertoire to a high standard.

“French composer, Robert Truillard published his Reverie in 1986. The work remains popular for intermediate clarinetists. With a typical performance lasting around 2 minutes and 46 seconds, Reverie is in Ternary Form, with the 'B' section marked 'Scherzando' and containing a short cadenza passage. The solo Clarinet part makes use of variety in articulation, tempo, dynamics and phrasing, amongst other aspects. For all aspiring, intermediate clarinetists, Truillard's Reverie provides exciting, alternative repertoire.&rdquo.

Gabriel Pierne (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organist. Despite being predominantly remembered as a conductor, his Canzonetta remains a recognised piece in the Clarinet repertoire. Pierne studied at the Paris Conservatoire before taking up the position of chief conductor for the concert series, Concerts Colonne in 1910. He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird. Pierne composed for a variety of instruments, Canzonetta for Clarinet with Piano accompaniment being one of four solo works by the composer. This Pierne piece for Clarinet contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as lyrical melodies, a significant number of performance directions, flourishes of semiquavers, chromaticism and many changes in dynamics. Canzonetta is a varied piece, essential to the repertoire of aspiring clarinetists..
