Their presence draws us into the story of Christmas each year, reminding us of the power, simplicity, and awesome significance of the birth of the Christ Child. Pepper Choplin explores these reflections of Christ through his distinctive musical style of memorable tunes and colorful harmonies, celebrating the Child in a thoughtful, jubilant, and accessible way for SATB or SAB choirs. Enrich your own Christmas Images of Adoration by joining together to reflect on the identity of this Child and all that He would become, both while on earth and throughout the following millennia! This edition for Holy Thursday was written to reflect African American idioms. “Pange lingua†has rhythm and motion, yet acknowledges the solemn tone of the liturgical moment. As the ritual action moves from procession to adoration and repose, the setting moves to “Tantum ergo.†Though it, too, should have motion, it is more reflective of this most solemn moment: the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The closing “Amen†ending on a perfect fifth recalls the style of ancient chant and organum.   .

Tim Raymond's dramatic and inventive organ piece was composed for the instrument in St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, and was inspired by a plainchant melody found in a manuscript compiled there in 1481. Atmospheric, mysterious and fluid textures alternate with energetic, toccata like passages, reflecting and transforming the pitch structures and temporal proportions of the chant a meditation on the Trinity. A further dimension connects and resonates with the colourful pantheism and cosmic symbolism of the Van Eyck brothers' famous fifteenth century altarpiece, The Adoration of the Sacred Lamb, created for, and housed in, St Bavo's.

FANFARE PRELUDE: O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST is based on the hymn-tune “St. Anne,†which was used by G.F.Handel in the Chandos anthem “O Praise the Lord,†and by J.S.Bach in his triple fugue in E-flat “The St. Anne Fugue.†James Curnow’s FANFARE PRELUDE: O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST captures the thoughts of this magnificent hymn, which speaks of our country’s reliance upon God. The unusual 4/4 meter setting with artfully crafted re-harmonizations and lush counterpoint gives each listener cause to reflect on the importance and meaning of this melody to patriotic Americans everywhere.Inspired!

No traditional tunes of any kind are made use of in this piece, in which I have wished to express my personal feelings about my own country (Australia) and people, and also to voice a certain kind of emotion that seems to me not untypical of native-born Colonials in general.Perhaps it is not unnatural that people living more or less lonelily in vast virgin countries and struggling against natural and climatic hardships (rather than against the more actively and dramaticly exciting counter wills of their fellow men, as in more thickly populated lands) should run largely to that patiently yearning, inactive sentimental wistfulness that we find so touchingly expressed in much American art; for instance in Mark Twains Huckleberry Finn, and Stephen C. Foster's adorable songs, My Old Kentucky Home, Old Folks at Home, etc. I have also noticed curious, almost Italian-like, musical tendencies in brass band performances and ways of singing in Australia (such as a preference for richness and intensity of tone and soulful breadth of phrasing over more subtly and sensitively varied delicacies of expression) which are also reflected here.Percy Aldridge Grainger.
