Maxwell Davies' 'Das Rauschende der Farbe' (The Sound of Colour) is a reflection on the life and work of the German artist Paula Modersohn-Becker who died aged 31 in 1907. Maxwell Davies first got to know the artist's work whilst on a school exchange in Hamburg in 1951 and the composer has since written that Modersohn-Becker's work has influenced the way that he views the relationship between art and the landscape in which it is produced. This is a particularly significant statement for a composer whose music is often a response to the land and seascape of his adopted home in the Orkney Isles. Commissioned by the Bremer Philharmoniker and first performed by them in 2007, the 30 minute orchestral work in three movements is one of the key works by Maxwell Davies in recent years.

On Reflection is a companion piece to the earlier sextet The Miraculous Mandolin(2007), for a similar combination of instruments. But it is somewhat more introspective, as implied by the title, which also refers to the technical processes employed. The first section sets up a contrast between busy linear material and ‘frozen’ chordal passages, both emanating from a single source. The first part of the final section largely develops the quick character, but the piece ends with a chorale like reworking of the chords. At the centre is a slow section, which perhaps reflects the title most aptly.

Written for 3 to 6 octave handbell choir and 3 to 5 octaves of handchimes. Level 5. Not at all for the feint of heart, Michael Helman's three-movement masterwork is a true tour de force for your ensemble. The piece opens with the Exaltation, which alternates between a stately Baroque feel and a more modern syncopated rhythm, creating an atmosphere both old and new. This segues to the gentle Reflection, set in a lilting 9/8 time, which then gives way to the driving rhythms of the Dance, set primarily in a minor 7/8 time, but with occasional measures in 6/8, 3/8, and 4/4 thrown in for good measure. An outstanding musical statement for your advanced ensemble!
