Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 4: Orchestra: Study Score

Hardback-Ralph Vaughan Williams's 6th Symphony was composed immediately after the Second World War and its dramatic and at times violent musical language was long felt to be a comment on that conflict (though the composer denied it had any programmatic intent). Its power and invention were immediately recognized and it has remained part of the concert repertoire ever since. For this newly engraved edition editor David Lloyd-Jones has consulted all extant sources and materials to create a score matching the composer's intentions.

Ralph Vaughan Williams' Norfolk Rhapsody No. 2 for large Orchestra.Vaughan Williams originally wrote three Norfolk Rhapsodies with the intention of turning them into a three-movement Norfolk Symphony. This the second rhapsody is a telescoped slow movement and scherzo which has been completed and edited by Stephen Hogger. The first has long been in the repertoire but numbers two and three have not been performed since 1914. The third rhapsody unfortunately did not survive.

Vocal ScoreCantata for Baritone Solo SSAA chorus and orchestra Following the revelatory release of A London Symphony in its original version the publication of Willow-wood is another landmark in our deepening understanding of the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams.Last performed in 1909 the year of The Wasps and On Wenlock Edge this setting of four sonnets by the Victorian poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti has recently been reconstructed from the autograph score and orchestral material made available on hire from the publisher. Reflecting the veiled eroticism and sombre atmosphere of the texts the music is dark-hued andsensuous its wordless female choir looking forward to the Five Mystical Songs A Sea Symphony and Flos Campi. In this heightened atmosphere of Pre-Raphaelite passion the composer\'s richly chromatic harmonies sound an unfamiliar note and the piece which lasts about 14 minutes will not only fascinate specialists but also have a broad appeal to many lovers of English music for whom it will be a significant discovery. A recording of Willow-wood on the Naxos label is scheduled for release early in 2006.

Symphony No.3-The Pastoral Symphony premiered on January 26 1922 and somewhat puzzled audiences with its rejection of the established classical themes in favour of a more folk based work. Nevertheless it continues to rise in popularity and is firmly settled amongst Vaughan Williams greatest works. This is the Study Score for Full Orchestra and Solo Soprano or Tenor.

The Tuba Concerto was composed in 1953/4 after the London Symphony Orchestra invited Vaughan Williams to write a work for inclusion in the Orchestra’s fiftieth anniversary concert. The first performance was given by Philip Catelinet in the Royal Festival Hall London on 13th June 1954 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. The brass band arrangement is by Phillip Littlemore and is a welcome addition to the brass band repertoire.
